Hi everyone. I've seen many discussion on this at other forums, but I think I'm going to ask it once again. Is Honda OEM filter the same as Fram/Honeywell oil filter? I heard someone saying they are the same, but also someone saying there's something different.
Should I simply use a cheaper filter that is better than Fram(e.g. Purolator PureONE on amazon) forget about OEM once and for all?

So there's no point at all to insist on OEM filter? Cause I heard many bad thing on Fram filter and there's plenty of filters better than Fram, and cheaper than OEM filter (cost 6~10 dollars....).

The Honda OEM filters are made by Fram, but they are made to Honda specifications. Based on pictures of cut open filters I have seen, the Honda filters are not the infamous orange can or other filters in the Fram lineup.

I am thinking of cutting up mine from the last change and get a closer look myself.

I work for a place where we supply automotive companies with integrated circuits, and the quality control requirements are very stringent. I doubt Honda would keep doing business with Fram for long if they supplied Honda with products that compromise their reliability and reputation record.

TwoWheelRider, what you're saying is the claim I saw on other forum. OEM or not thing is killing me here.

There are two OEM filters sold in north america. One is the A01 filter, which is NOT a fram. The A02 filter is a fram-variant. The A02 version still has cardboard endcaps, but has more filter surface area and a silicon ADBV.

Well, I cut it open (A02 part). I don't understand all the bashing these Honda filters get.

The can was just as difficult to open as a Napa Gold. There is a metal tube support in the middle, but is an "end-cap-less" design. The bypass valve is spring loaded. There is an ADB valve comparable to other filters I have opened up. I am not going to count the pleats, but there are a great deal more than the orange can has. There is nothing in here I find in common with the dreaded orange can.

Nothing alarming. Nothing special.

Anyhow, I would not loose sleep over it. The PureOne is a very good filter so if you can get it for less, go for it.

Having recently cut open an A-02 I can tell you it is very similar looking to the Fram Tough Guard. Different looking bypass but otherwise very close to Tough Guard.

The A-01 has been posted here before and does look better, ie., more substantial.

That said, I am currently running a Pure One on my 07 V6 Accord. I have a stash because of all the rebates and AAP coopins, Amazon also has great deals on them. It's a fine filter, less expensive and better IMO than the two Honda varieties. I plan on using Pure Ones for the forseeable future.

Your car, but Pure One is a great choice and great value.

I would run the A-01 but not the A-02. Just my opinion. I just replaced the FF in my Honda and it had a Toyo Roki filter on it. Decided to go with the Mobil 1 filter, considering the quality and extended OCI.

I wouldn't go out of your way to pick up a Honda filter unless it's the S2000/A01/Filtech...

There's nothing special here, it's an Extra Guard with upgraded ADBV and torque stopper gasket.

Thanks guys. I guess I would be better of to go with PureOne since it's good and cheap, and that I don't know which kind of OEM filter my local dealer use.

Good choice!

Even if you can find the A-01, the Pure One will be less expensive, ie., a better value.
