hey all just picked up a 2014 rdx, its got 120k miles mostly highway apparently. Was told timing belt was never changed and would need to be done soon.

i understand we cannot predict the future and i know of course asap is best to change it but how long is this supposed to last? like till around 140-150 it will be fine? or is it long overdue

if overdue then do it within next 1k miles or has to be done like yesterday?

I am of course going to get it done this week but just needed some time to call around, get parts order and don’t want it to snap as I will probably put 600-700 miles on it this week due to a small road trip

Thanks!

I think it's 105k, though Honda puts it on the minder.

It's not an emergency at 120k, but you should do it when you can, so getting it done this week or next week is no problem at all.
ty so much, i was doing some research and seems people say sometimes belt doesnt really need changing its the tensioner, of course when the job is done going to do all the parts u suggested in last post but just wondering if u know of any tensioner issues at 120?

of course going to change asap it all but just asking for piece of mind for my roadie

No , its not "safe" its a time bomb that cant see a clock or fuse on.

The order of priority in deciding when it should be changed goes like this.

MM> 60K severe duty> 105/10 years.

You are out of time and playing with fire. I wouldnt drive that car anywhere without doing it.
It's an interference engine and if it goes there's a 99% chance it takes the engine out with it.

You already asked this vis a vis how to negotiate on this car, we answered. Words came out.

I wouldn't have left the dealer without doing it and would have leveraged buying the car to get a deal on everything you dont know was done that it needs.

The whole assembly, belt, pump, rollers and tensioner need to be replaced.
Going into it and not doing the whole thing is an invitation to going in twice.

Yes, it's generally the tensioner that fails and then it takes the belt with it so people still think the failure was "the timing belt broke". There's a Honda/Acura specialist shop nearby that we've used for different jobs and he says you can go past 105k miles but he tells his customers to not go beyond 120-130k, so you're pushing his limit. He only uses OEM parts (when readily available) and for TB jobs, he replaces everything, not just the belt.

Awesome thanks for input going to do it right around 120,500 just got a road trip to do and then will do it

I’d do it now. Not only has it passed the mileage at 100k, but at ten years is at the point to change even if it only had 10k miles on it.

You’ll likely be fine changing after your road trip, it’s not like these things have a timer. If only we had X-ray vision….

Are these interference type engines?
I believe they are. The guy I bought from was not the main owner but said his mechanic said to do before 140 which is why apparently he didn’t do it yet

You are now in the gambling zone, and with every additional mile the odds get worse.

Its up to you, not us, whether you want to gamble with an interference engine.

Thank you for the feedback! I am of course doing it in the next two days just praying it doesn’t go in the next two days, going to put 400 miles on it now that’s about it

On a sidenote I like to be optimistic, as other forms were showing data and experiences with lasting 130 and 140 and 150, of course I am in no means going to take it that long. It just gives me peace of mind on this last road trip home until I can change it out

I'm in a similar position but a bit different. Mine is more or less the same engine but in a 2014 Accord. Mine was babied and kept in a garage in a very warm climate and only has 22K miles on it.

I'm thinking I'll change it around 30 or 40K miles. Am I nuts?

*update*

i decided to get it changed from honda for piece of mind. i was afraid to goto an indie as i don't know anyone in my area and felt like for this one repair honda would serve me better. i called around got quotes and when i spoke to the service advisors they would always confirm it was the whole timing assembly being replaced but would never really list parts or seem to be detailed and would always say "yeah yeah its everything". i was just in the impression that honda is experts on this. i got a price for $1500 which seems to be the going in ny area but used a 10% service coupon and got it down to $1300 ish. when i dropped the vehicle off i asked again and they said its a kit and they do it all. today i picked up the vehicle and now the invoice/quote only showed:

timing belt with part #
water pump with part #
tensioner with part #
rad flush
coolant with part #

i asked about the idler/idler pulley and tensioner pulley/timing belt adjuster and if it was done and i got a reply that oh yeah it was i can put it on the invoice if you want. and i asked well only if it was done no point of writing it to write it and the rep replied that oh ya it was done sometimes the computer just puts it like that

maybe i am looking too much into this but for me it felt like maybe it wasn't done and the sa doesn't really know properly what was done but it could also be the case that the honda book tells them to change it all and it was indeed done. i will never know because even if i ask them again or speak to the tech he can just lie and i am too busy to take off timing cover etc

any input?
