Honda HRR216 handle drive lever

First time post! I have a honda hrr216 that would not self propel. So i took apart the transmission (added new wheel bushings to try and make it roll backwards as well) adjusted cables, etc. To no avail. Finally I took apart the handle mechanism to discover a filthy roller pin and cable. If I pull the pin and cable self propel works so this seems to be where the problem lies. However i cannot get this dadgum pin to stay in position to where the brackets surrounding the pin will fit the pin in the grooves which allows the user to twist the lever,pull the pin, and move the mower. I am really not sure why but the pin just goes sideways or does not stay within the grooves. Does anyone have experience with this? Any tips? Thanks in advance.

I have a different honda mower but if i'm thinking of what you're talking about the pin that pins the cable onto the handle mechanism is actually supposed to be loose in the groove so that when you move the handle the groove moves and changes the angle and the pin slides in the groove to tighten or loosen the cable. There should be an adjustment screw for the cable tension somewhere up ahead in the line depending on your exact model to make adjustments to the lenght of pull, not sure what the exact terminology is, should look like a long screw/sleeve with two jam nuts.
