2003 Honda Odyssey with 63000 miles.I changed oil 400 miles ago. Used a blend of 2.6 qts. Valv.Synpower and 2.0 qts. of 5w30 TropArtic.I've used Synpower for the last 3 oil changes with no problems(until now).New Pure One PL14459. PROBLEM: Seems like a lifter, but could it be the serpentine belt tensioner? Ticking increases with engine speed.Change oil and see if tick disappears? Van has had either Mobil1 or Castrol Syntec changes twice a year since new with Fram PH3593A. THANKS to all.

are you sure it isnt being caused by the filter? Frams cause all kinds of startup noise in some setups.

Does anyone know if the valves have to adjusted on the six cylinders, like on the Honda 4's? Maybe the valves need to be adjusted?

He says the noise increases with speed, so I think it happens after start up, thus throwing suspicion away from the marginally acceptable Fram.

I do not use Fram anymore, but never had this ticking with their filters. Pure Ones should not be the problem on a Honda,BUT I need to do something. What about ticking with TropArtic or Synpower?

Yep they sure do. They are mechanical lash adjusters just like the Honda 4 cyls. You could pop the serp belt off and run it briefly to see if the noise stops.

Possible the valves are loose. Not likely, though. That generation 3.5 engine generally ends up with valves too tight, not loose. Try changing the oil with a different type and a different filter. That's the easiest and cheapest way to find out if that's the problem. No reason to spend a bunch of time and money when it may just be as simple as an oil change.

If it still ticks with different oil/filter, then you can start further diagnosis.

One of the best and cheapest diagnostic tools to own is a stethoscope. Mechanics versions have a long straight probe and work well for isolating noises. Wheel bearings, valvetrain noise, tensioners, etc.

I have very few hard and fast rules in the auto business, but one of the top 5 is NO FRAM FILTERS!

Mechanic's stethoscope would help your diagnosis.

Don't jump to conclusions about oil or filters. Give it a week, and the tick might go away on its own.
