I have a Honda Fourtrax 70 fourwheeler I've had since I was a kid. I believe it's an early 80s model. My uncle had bought it used for my cousin, who then sold it to my mom who gave it to me in the mid 90s. The bad part :( it's been sitting for 7 years without being started, all of which is my fault. I opened the gas cap to find the tank rusted where there wasn't any gasoline in it. I drained out the old gas which was absolutely nasty as you can imagine.

Does anybody have an idea on how to clean out the old rust? What else issues do you think I may run in to? I'm not a small engine expert by any means, just wanted to see what fellow members of BITOG have to say. I want to pass it down to my son when he's old enough to ride it.

Take the tank off and remove the fuel petcock and filter. Put nuts, bolts, chain etc in the tank and shake.
Thanks, is there anything I need to do after to keep it from rusting again? I honestly don't know how long it's been this way, the last time I can remember starting it was 7 years ago.

they make a plastic coating if it leaks google it. just keep it full of fuel and they wont rust (I own 2 Honda 200ES trikes) other thing is buying a used one from e.bay.

We've fixed a couple street bike tanks with vinegar. It works quite well. Put a bunch of nuts, bolts, screws etc in the tank then fill it with vinegar. Let it soak for a few days, give it some real good shakes during that time.

not that bad, many old ATV's were 'creamed'... ebay has a good market for old parts but the tanks in decent shape with good decals can go for north of $300.

These pics are less than 10yrs old but nothings changed, I have to exercise them from lack of use.

This is it. My cousin and I rode this so much growing up. I was getting ready to drain the old gas from it.

O.K. plenty to work with here, only question is how far to you want to take it back? fuel tank is covered that's a break if your replacing it no need to sweat decals or dents...after fuel you may discover needs to shore-up exhaust and starter.

I'm just wanting to clean it up and get it running again.

Baby steps, one foot in front of the other...fuel tank leads to the carb...was the fuel turned off those 7 years? you may want to inspect the muffler and recoil right away before you dive in here....all these used parts sell for big money guys doing exactly what you are for much the same reason...get a e.bay search going..baby steps.

I've used the "Creme" tank sealant with good results. But I make sure to clean the tank perfectly before pouring that stuff in. One thing, it all goes to the bottom, so make sure to drain out the excess.
