Honda Filters?

I got very tired of the constantly changing manufacturers, country of origin and sourcing of filters. Was a faithful user of the Mobil1 M110 for years when made by Champion Labs, picking a good filter became a game of Wack-A-Mole. I gave up and just went to the Honda 15400-PLM-A02, the "Blue Fram in a can"
Honda warranties their engines using this filter and UOA's have shown very low particle counts with them.
I can buy them in bulk in the $7 range, but I supply the oil and let the dealership supply the filter when going in for a change. They are US made and have been consistent in quality.

I've been using the cheap EcoGard $2.52 filters on my last few oil changes on my Odyssey since I change my oil more often. I may try out that Premium Guard XL next because I sometimes worry since the EcoGard's are so cheap.

No worries on the $2.52 EcoGards as they are the same as the 5k Premium Guards.

Another option is Baldwin B1402, B1431 or B161-S. The B1431 and B161-S are about 1/2 inch longer than their B1402 filter. The B161-S has a little finer filter media, and a 20-psi pressure relief valve as opposed to the 14- psi on the B1402 and B1431. www.baldwinfilters.com
These filters are made in USA in Kearney Nebraska, and their parent company is Parker-Hannifin Corp. Good quality. Otherwise, go with the OEM Honda filter. If your Honda is out of warranty use 5w-30 engine oil, otherwise use 0w-20. Whatever oil you use, be sure it is full synthetic. Go no more than 5000-mile oil change intervals or every 6 months, whichever comes first. Now you have my opinion. Take care.

Those ecogards look hard to beat at that price.

I have been using the HENGST H97W05 which looks good also and is $3.50 on RA.

Wish you didn't have to pay another $7 to get something with a silicon ADBV. The CHamp XL used to have it - but the last two I bought did not.

Sort of related (don't mean to hijack); but is the R84356 (Carquest Select) equivalent to the EcoGards referenced? - Short OCI Honda use case.
Yes the 5K Carquests are also Premium Guard made!! A fine filter.

that is out dated. those were champion labs built filters, then M+H and finally premium guard.
Here's a Carquest filter when it was made by M+H.

OK ... full disclosure as I've been embarrased to ask about this SKU. 😨

Last month, I went to an AAP outlet nearby that was in the process of closing down, asking for one 84356, and ignorant of the distinction of the 'R' prefix. After being dazzled with the low price of a multipack (that the store would not unseal prior to purchase), I took the plunge and spent $13.10 for the dozen including sales tax.

FWIW, lot number (on all 12 and the box) and country of origin shown in the attached.

^^^ The red Carquest is their lower tier filter. But that one is still made by PGI, but in the China factory instead of the Vietnam factory.

Hengst has a nice build quality, even pleats and neat glue job . The media is lacking

I don't know much about filtration, but I know an awful lot about light, and a fair bit about producing an non-woven product. I really don't think these pictures are particularly useful - trapping light and trapping particles is quite different. But yes, I doubt they are the best filtering product out there. Of course one with a leaky bypass or torn pleat isn't either.

You never know what you're getting with HONDA oil filters . CRAZY BILL'S GRAGE placed a Y.T. video today that has a used HONDA oil filter and 4 other oil filters cut open . Ain't what they used to be . May want to consider the CARQUEST Premium 84356 that others have mentioned . There's also the STP Extended Life S7317XL at AUTOZONE or the MICROGUARD Select MSL57356 at O'Reilly Auto Parts . All are good filters at a reasonable price .

Honda RTA oil filter is decent, its made in japan and youtube video of cutting it down show that its decently constructed. Unfortunately there are no official specs for efficiency, and its not a high efficiency filter. If you can get them for $7.xx, its not bad…

@Glenda W. - any recommendations from below list on RA - looking at 12 pack for #1 and #2. Is ECOGARD X4610 in the middle or bottom when compared with Pro-tec or Champ?

1- ACDELCO PF2057 Gold
2-PRO-TEC PXL57356
3-CHAMP / LUBER-FINER PH2867
4-BOSCH 3323 Premium

Personally I don’t like filters 1, 2, or 3. 4 I don’t know enough about to have an opinion but the made in mexico ones look horrible. I would rate the Ecogard above all quality wise, the Bosch might have better efficiency. If ordering from RA the Premium Guard XL is the best hands down.
