Honda Filter Bypass Pressure

A bit of information for whom it may concern:

I had been under the impression that the Purolator 14610 bypass pressure setting (14-16 psi) is closer to Honda's specification than Wix's 51356 (8-11 psi).

I was wrong, at least according to the service department at my dealer. When I pressed them to look up the information, which they were reluctant to do, they finally said their spec is 10 psi.

This relieves the consternation I felt when I decided to use a Wix for the present OCI, although I suppose it probably makes very little difference.

How often does a filter go into bypass, anyway?

Others may suggest otherwise ..but it's very rare ..even with a loaded filter. The bypass limits the amount of resistance the filter can attain. I believe that the setting is based on the strength of the media.

I've always thought the Purolator L14459 was the Honda application.

Mike, The 14459 is what they spec for the S2000, I believe, and probably the sportier Acuras. It is a short, fat filter somewhat larger by volume than the 14610. Most Hondas get the 14610.

Thanks for the comments. My guess at this point is that I should have no worries using P1s, as I change every 5k, the motor is spotless, and it only rarely gets below 20 deg. F. around here.

Keep in mind it is a pressure differential valve, which compares the incoming and outgoing pressures and opens if additional fluid is needed.
As a practical matter, about the only times it would be needed are on cold starts (especially in winter in cold climate) and if the filter is partially plugged--- well, OK, if you have a crummy filter that is very restrictive and are using a cheap non-synthetic that doesn't flow well at room temp could also make a difference.

I'm using those exact Wix's right now on my 2001 Civic and CR-V. I plan on leaving them on 10k on both cars. Civic has 0w20 M1 and CR-V has 5w20 M1.
I have noticed that the oil light stays on longer on the Civic at first startup with this setup vs. the Amsoil 0w30 and their filters. I think the oil's so thin it needs to build pressure. No problems to date.
