Changing oil for a friend's 2000 Civic. His driving fits severe service as he does a lot of trips
He has a Honda filter on it currently and probably has about 1200 miles since last oil change 5 months ago. Severe service states 3,750 miles or 6 months for oil/filter but I think this filter will be fine until next change.

Opinions? I have the new filter ready but it seems wasteful to throw out a good filter with only 1200 miles on it.

The problem is the build up of acid and crud. If you don't change the filter, too, you could be leaving a lot of the stuff in the filter. The acids will go right back into the engine. Go ahead, and spend the big bucks and use a new filter.

Someone said it here once before - change oil w/o changing the filter is like taking a shower and put your dirty underwear right back on.

You're confusing skid marks on your skivies with acid in your filter, but still reasons to change both.

The 2005 Severe service schedule for Honda Civic is 5K miles/6month oil change *only* and filter @ 1yr:

"20,000 mi/32,000 km/1 yr Scheduled Maintenance
Recommended service for your 2005 Honda Civic:

Replace engine oil filter"

I'd like to know who's making their oil filters.

But I see this topic is currently being covered in the changing too soon ????? thread
