Honda EU2000i valve check

My 2007 inverter generator has been getting hard to start lately although it runs fine. The carb was cleaned last year so that wasn't the problem. I have never checked the valve clearances so I figured it was past due. Checking and adjusting the valves is the easy part but getting all of the plastic off is another story.

Honda specs are .15mm for the intake valve and .20 for the exhaust and both of mine were way too tight.

It would often take ten pulls or more to cold start the engine but after the valve adjustment it starts within two pulls every time! I should have done this a few years ago but I feel better now about relying on this generator in the future.

Interesting valvetrain. I assume that's an OHC getup, the cam having the large sprocket on it, but how does it actuate the valves?

Good question. The EU2000i has the Honda GX100 commercial grade engine so you can look it up. Here's a pic that might help.
