My BIL has a Honda EM7000IS generator . has had it for 10 years . He has been trying to get it going this year . It would start for a few seconds ,and then die out, and the overload light would come on . There is a lot of gas coming out the carb

We were thinking of changing the carb , but at $350 a pop for one , its a gamble . The overload light seems to indicate a bad invertor board , but at $1300 its not a good gamble to buy and try to see if it works .

I can consistantly start it and run for a few second and then the overload light comes on.

Any suggestions on what else to look for ?

Take apart the carburetor bowl and clean the jets and needle valve/seat thoroughly with spray carb cleaner solvent. Also, be sure to place a significant electrical load on the inverter generator before and during operation. I prefer to use an electric resistance space heater which is rated for 1500 watts to ensure the "overload" protection circuit is not actually tripping due to insufficient load demands.

Are you saying start it with a load plugged into it? My little inverter says have nothing plugged in until engine speed stabilizes. Do I misunderstand what you're saying?
You can wait a minute until it comes off choke to plug in a load; however, don't let it run unloaded for any length of time once the speed is stabilized. Otherwise, it will continuously hunt and surge and occasionally stall with no/little electrical load.

I took the carb apart and cleaned it . Done this on quite a few Honda motors before . It will start up with no issue but then it will die . This carb is controlled by a circuit board thus why it’s so expensive . Has little motors on top .

I think the board is bad and not controlling the carb correctly . I did not know there needs to be a load on it as this is the first invertor type I have worked on .

I am kinda thinking to tell him just buy a new gen . Can get a bigger gen for less then price of a board . Seems such a waste though .

Can you bypass the electronic control features? Sometimes the shut off feature is not necessary.

An open frame high quality generator is always my first recommendation. Easy oil changes, easy maintenance, far fewer parts to go bad. Honda makes great stuff, but like everything, the more complex it is, the more difficult it is to fix.

It is probably designed to shut down for a severe problem like inverter failure. You can read error codes out of the computer.

told him to just buy a new one and he bought tri fuel one so he can hook it up to his gas line. Sometimes Honda parts are just crazy priced

oil level is good. i am pretty sure it the board , but i am not going to throw $1300 to hope. plenty of gen out there for sale that are more modern and use multi fuel these days

That electrically controlled carb, if it’s like the eu2k, is still a carb, and the servo motor sets the governor and isnt direct-to throttle. Mine has an idle speed screw just like anything else. Unless yours is EFI, I’m definitely with the “carb first” gang.

The overload light could be coming on because that’s what it looks like when there’s insufficient rpm.
