Happy New Year BITOGERS.

This filter and guessing Honda 5w20 was in and on a 2020 Honda CRV

Put back in Safety Kleen blend 5w30 and Auto Extra 57356 filter. OLM was at 40% also.

Typical Fram made A02, unknown fci, looks fine. Last checked, closest dealer wanted ~$9+, top retail ~$8.50. Other places like AAP and AZ want significantly more. Not from me. Many other options in that price range or much less, and best info with better efficiency too.

Thinking the sooty oil appearance from 1.5L DI (?), not that unusual.

Thanks for c&p.

Yes, 1.5 engine. Oil very filthy black looking. Nothing in end of can so must be doing something right

Mileage is correct. I would personally go 15k on this filter since I did 20~ plus on a ancient tough guard and modern tough guard

Thanks. I was trying to say that it appeared that this filter went 12k not that it was limited by 12k. Sorry for the confusion. While I'm a Fram fanboy I must ask that you didn't have any trouble with the cardboard ends on a 20k run? No real noticeable deterioration?

Nope, never any issues running Fram Tough Guards. I know there’s plenty of Fram haters here. It is what it is

I'm guessing the oil has been changed at least once, if they followed the MM. My CR-V MM reminded me at 1 year/6500 miles and a year later at 13k.

Does this CRV have the 1.5l turbo DI engine?

We have a 21 CRV and did a lot of reading on the fuel dilution that these engines are prone to. Here is what I have settled on - maybe it helps you or someone else out if you havent analyzed it to your satisfaction yet.

Filter:

Changing with every oil change, ignoring Hondas every other, filters are cheap.

during warranty period - Honda A02 (Fram made) filter, I have cut apart a couple used ones, seems decent, media seemed lightly lower strength but I havent cut open enough to have a scientific sample. Sticking to a Honda filter during warranty to eliminate any warranty issues at all. (Do my own lube maintenance, I keep emailed records, but figure having the Honda filter might eliminate any questions some day)

After powertrain warranty period - I have settled on Bosch 3323 Premium filters for my Hondas. Cheapish ($4) from Rockauto, I have cut open a new and used one and they seemed really well made and good condition. Media was strong new, dont think I cut up the used media. Will cut up all in the future.

Oil:

Changing on the MM reminders but not stretching/waiting like I might do if needed on other Hondas I own, they are all getting M1 EP now. (For the others, if I am busy, I might let them go an extra 1k miles)

I am sticking with Mobil 1 0w20 Extended Performance. It seems to be the most likely to resist the fuel dilution viscosity change despite the PAO content in the new/current formula being a mystery. I am pinning my hope on the GF6 cert and the EP product. I did look at PP 0w20 and Valvoline EP 0w20 and they carry the GF6 cert also.

I have thought about 5w30 M1 EP to keep viscosity in spec, but I think I would try shortening the OCI instead first.

I did have the first oil change analyzed by Blackstone (not the best fuel dilution lab) and it was 4 pct I think. The vehicle did have a lot of short trips in that first OCI. It is seeing a lot longer drives now.

My son has the same car with the same engine only his is a 2017. I change the oil and filter every 5000 miles religiously. when changing oil it pours like water and stinks like gasoline. So far no issues at all. He does mostly driving highway miles. 50 miles one way to work 95% highway miles with no stop and go traffic. he has about 120,000 miles on the car. Keep up with those oil and filter changes.
