Under normal driving conditions, I don't think so. I've seen plenty of destroyed engines from idiots who abused them to the point of massive amounts of oil burning / smoke spewing out the exhaust but the block was still spinning nonetheless.

Currently AMSOIL Signature Series 5w20 in our CRV. 10K intervals. This spring it's either Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 or Mobil 0W20. May add some MoS2, I still haven't decided.

Thanks all! Some definite things learned so far, correct me if I'm wrong:

1) Honda's Maintenance Minder (MM) actually is a lot smarter than what I initially gave it credit for

2) Not following the MM will void the warranty

3) Good oil filters can likely go 15k between changes

4) Used Oil Analysis is a good idea when experimenting with different configurations

5) Thicker oil is good for hot weather but not so good for gas mileage

6) Shorter runs means I should likely change oil more frequently than compared to longer highway drives

He meant going PAST what the MM says (explain: it says to change @ 8k but the OP went 12k!)

This is correct. The owners manual says 5w20 for year round protection for the regular Civic model.

Lol, I know, but I wanted to point out that he would be wasting money and oil.

Oh, I agree, no doubt about it. The Civic will keep on running for YEARS even if he continues with 12k OCIs on PP.

Suppose many short trips and no H'way trips for the most part and lots of 5pm stop and go plus

short trips in the cold winter months. Believe me you are not wasting oil by changing it sooner. Just think of I95 at 4pm on a summer, Friday .

Then the Honda's MM will tell him to change the oil sooner.
