honda brake fluid

Nah! The only 2 things that you need to watch out for in Honda cars shall be the Honda AT trannie fluid (it has different seal swelling properties) and also Honda power steering fluid.

I've been doing Honda brakes with Valvoline Synpower DOT4 or even generic DOT 3 fluids for a while and all is well.

Use ATE super plue or typ 200 (the equivalent but yellow) and youve got it made. Best stuff out there found for a reasonable price. Any euro car place has it.

My brother in law has 3 Honda Civics, a 1985, 1988 and 1990. He just changes the brake fluid every 1 to 2 years, no brand in particular, and has zero problems. The key is to have fresh fluid of the correct DOT grade, not necessarily a particular brand. I just changed the factory brake fluid on my 1996 Ford Contour for the first time this year. I used Coastal DOT 3 because I'm going to change it every 1 to 2 years so it doesn't really matter as to the brand. The Contour doesn't have ABS so it's easy to change. The old brake fluid, especially, at the rear wheel cylinders was nasty

. Yet the fluid in the master cylinder didn't look that bad. It was still dark honey colored and not black like at the wheel cylinders. The car stops better now with the new brake fluid especially in a panic situation, like deer in the road

I would not have a problem with Valvoline Synpower DOT 3/4 or Castrol LMA at app 5 dollars per 32 oz. I have used the ATE, but really can't justify the higher pricing. Honda recommends 3 years and VW recommends 2 years. So in that context, consider Honda DOT 3 brake fluid. So I would not get Honda brake fluid, if it costed more than Valvoline Synpower and or Castrol LMA at 5 dollars per 32 oz.


I have gone up to 10 years in some of my vehicles.

But truly I would not recommend THAT!

Hey , everyone
i am gonna flush my brake fluid very soon.
i have a honda civic, i called honda and they said to use only dot 3 honda dealer fluid. or the seals will shrink over time.
i thought all dot3 brake fluid was the same ?,

has any body used non-dealer brake fluid in a honda before, only to suffer the wrath ?

'91 Honda Prelude
Valvoline Synpower (DOT4) in both clutch and brakes for 6 yrs now.

New seals in clutch slave before flush/switch.

New OEM brake master @ 151k mi (3 yrs ago), new OEM clutch master 2? yrs ago (I forgot to write down when it was installed).

Flushed/bled clutch and brakes again this past summer.

I really think that Honda's claims are a little overblown, especially since the Helms "Factory Service" manual I bought says to use any Dot 3 or better.

Honda coolant, PS fluid, and transmission fluid should be used. But you can pick your own brake fluid.

yep i just flushed the 10 year old fluid in my accord. fixed the rear brake clicking noise too.

i wonder if old fluid could cause that?
