Honda Accord V6 oil usage

shurkai,
What you mean you don't baby it during break-in?

I have taken the car (3.0L V6) to 4k-5k rpm numerious times during break-in. No consumption after break-in.

I don't believe this full throttle during break in [censored] to seat rings...not in modern engines. Every new car I ever had I babied during break in and never used any oil.

So if you don't break the rings in during the break in period, do they never seat?

I did not either baby or abuse it during break in. I have seen on a Honda forum where there are others reporting oil usage such as mine. Honda did open a case for me, but until the usage exceeds 1 qt/1k miles they are not going to do anything. As stated in my initial post, I have owed 10 Honda products (including Acuras) all of which have never ahd an oil usage issue. My experiences with this car, more than just the oil issue, will most probably have me looking else where for my next DD purchase.

shurkai,

to put it short, it sounds like a manufacturing defect. It happens, even to Honda. You should probably contact Honda Corporate directly, they should do something about it. 1qt every 2k miles over the life of the vehicle can get costly, and is risky if it runs low.

I have, they did open a case for me...whatever that means. Their policy is that any usage that is < 1qt/1k miles is considered "within standards".

Dishdude - The hard break-in thing can matter more for some engines than others. It's not that they'll never seat, but they may not seat quite as well, giving a slightly lesser seal.

I am using GC presently. Thanks

shurkai,

The average american engne can consume about 1 quart per 3K so in a way you about in the average scale regarding your issue.

As far as American Honda not giving you much [censored] is only because their not selling allot of cars so Honda is just cutting back on the over-head. They can fix your issue easily but not until the economy get better.

If I were you I'd just drive it until the engine burning gets really bad and then sell it nd get another. I had a Civic that after 10K started consuming allot of fuel and the dealership blamed it on my heavy foot!!!! I only averaged about 50 miles on a 1/2 tank of gas. I sold it nd bought a Toyota Camry that gave me several years of loyal service.

Durango - I wouldn't call 1 quart in 3k miles average. Yeah, there are some engines where that's normal, but certainly not all. Heck, my Jeep was burning less than that (about a quart every 4000) with a bad plenum gasket, creating a vacuum leak right into the crankcase. I don't know how much fixing that helped though, as I haven't put enough miles on it since.

I've NEVER had an engine consume any where near that on any of the vehicles I own unless it had an issue like an oil leak. Which was always readily fixed. Would drive me nuts!

My last 3 new vehicles were broken in using some extreme driving techniques.
On the initial test drive I took the vehicles on the highway, and accelerated past 80 mph at full throttle.
I then bought the vehicles and continued to drive them hard for the first 500 miles.
First oil changes at 1000 miles then 5000 mile intervals there after.

I've never had an oil user until after 100,000 miles.
Mostly caused by leaks and not by burning.

and if that dont help contact your local lemon law attorney and speak to them it is a free service and the way they make their money is from the manufacture you dont spend a dime...If there is a dispute that the dealer is pretending there is nothing wrong no problem the attorney has certified mechanics to not only diagnose but to testify in court... I know of someone that had a problem with a cnew Civic she brought the car to the dealer 3 times and the problem was still there after she got the Lawyer involved 4 months later Honda waned the car back (a 2008 with around 10,000) and gladly gave her a new 2009 with44 miles...Try being nice for a while and then clobber them with the Law!
New York is not as good as New Jersey in regards to lemon law but N.Y. is ok..

Honda screwed me at every turn with my last 2 new Honda cars.

Currently driving a new VW w/4k miles. Hard break-in, over the last 3k I burned no more than a spit of oil.

After working for them, I don't see myself ever owning one.

On the 'off chance' that the driving condition have, in fact, 'gunmmed up the rings', I'd be inclined to try either a piston soak, or some really, really hard driving to try and get the engine to 'loosen up'.

As someone else said, sometimes these engines actually consume more oil from using a thicer grade - go down the the 20-weight Honda recommends, and see what happens.

Honda specs a 20 grade IIRC, so that could cause an issue with them under a warranty claim. If they do check the car out, I'd be sure to put a Honda Filter on it and a 20 grade Honda approved oil to play it safe.

I know, I know they'd have to prove the oil was at fault, etc, etc, etc........... Why take the chance?

I'd try a 20 grade Honda approved oil and see what happens, and would certainly have it in the sump if I went back to the dealer with the car. JMO

I haved used both Mobil 1 0w40 and the GC 0-30...had them in abundance. I will be giving PU 5-20 a try this weekend.
