Honda Accord I4 - OLM malfunction?

Hello BITOGers,

I bought a certified used Honda Accord Sport with 9800 miles on it. I asked the dealer for an oil and filter change before delivery.

I'm 600 miles in and the Oil Life Monitor still shows 100% ? Is this normal ?

In my past Mopar vehicles, the oil life would drop by 1% every 100-120 miles.

I drive 30 miles a day, mostly on the highway, 2-3 starts per day.

In my experience with two Hondas could well be, especially so with majority highway driving you note.

Don't panic, just keep an eye on it. Normal I'd say.

Not sure on that Accord but I had a Civic with the OLM and it went down in 10% intervals. It would stay on 100% for a while. I would not worry at all.

I believe my brothers 08 Accord with OLM only went down in increments of 10%. So yes, it can be expected to say 100% until it hits 90%.

Both my 14 Honda's OLM's increment in 10.

It's been averaging a little over 1K for each 10%.

Just reading about how Honda and Toyota keep their OLM algorithm real simple as compared to Chrysler or GM.

Makes sense that it probably drops down in 10% increments.

I will send an update when I hit 1000 miles!

Diverging on the topic a little, the dealer put in Honda's oil which I guess is a blend (?)

My friend runs Mobil 1 0W20 fully synthetic and he idles at a slightly lower RPM than mine. Same car, same model year, similar driving style.

His RPM drops from ~1900 to idle (1200-1300) sooner than mine on the really cold days.

When I drove heavily in a vehicle that had an OLM (2007 Impala), it would be about 10-12%/1000 when driven mainly on the highway.

But, sasilverbullet bring up a point, do you know what it increments in? Single percentage or in 10s?

Neighbor works at a Honda dealer. They can decide to run whatever brand/blend they want as long as it meets Honda's specs, which leaves a big margin.

If I had to have the dealer change the oil, I would request they use the Honda oil and show me the empty containers.

On my 2 Honda's I run Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 filter and I change at 30%. (edit: Mobil 1 Extended Performance if on sale)

Drops in 10% incriments until you hit 20%. After 20%, the light will trigger upon startup at 15%, and after that it goes to 10%, 5%, 0, and then it tracks the miles in negative numbers past 0.

I've been averaging about 7500 miles and my OLM reads 30% on both my 14 Hondas.

Advice here matches my experience. If your driving is mostly highway the 10% increment may take 1,200-1,300 miles. Typical mixed suburban driving may be 600-700 miles.

Drop to 10% after about 7500 miles is not the same as "drop by 10% after about 7500 miles".

I think sasilverbullet had 1 zero too many.

Might be a typo !

That would be a 75k OCI down to zero percent.

You would just be preparing to replace your transmission at the same time as your vehicle's first oil change! haha

So probably replacing both your trans and your engine at the same time.

Heck yeah it is fine. These V6 engines complement modern oils and work synergistically with fluid dynamics and what not. I owned a Vtec V6 myself (see sig, last line) and they are easy on oil due to tight engine design (clearances and thus tolerances?) take well to lighter oils imo namely that MC 5w-20 (I would recommend it for your Honda proudly) and in fact, that J30A5 engine allowed me to drop down to 5w-20 and acquire good FE, slick performance and excellent 5k OCIs And I Am down in the south south if you know what I mean so that's saying something and by golly I got something to say here on this one matter. Now granted if I were to do it all over again, I would see if the 5w30 yielded the same results but with more protection in mine but keep in mind FE was a bigger priority when gas is nearly 3 bucks per gallon.

I believe his Accord is a K24 model. I don't think they made an accord sport with the V6, although, the J V6 with a real manual transmission would be a fun car! Might need a bit of wizardry to keep the handling good though.

not to change the subject but things sure have changed. The oil monitor on my 78 Accord was a gizmo that had a color indicator that you reset when the oil was changed by pushing the key in a slot--if I remember correctly. I think there was a green, yellow and red colored indicator that I assume mechanically tripped via the odometer. Simple but it always functioned fine.
