8033 miles at sample date with 18,438 total miles on a 2005 Honda CR-V, vehicle sees almosy exclusively short trips with 90 mile freeway trips every few months or so. Oil has been in service since 3/17/07 (and it looks like it's a little past done...) I'm figuring on going with Mobil 1 5W-20 with a Mobil 1 oil filter plus a new air filter.

Blackstone Comments: High wear and silicon levels turned up in the first sample from this Honda and both may be related if the silicon is from abrasive dirt getting past the air filter. Universal averages show typical wear from the Honda 2.4L after about 6,400 miles oil use. This oil was run longer, so we expected to see higher iron, though all other wear should have read closer to averages. Nothing was high enough to suggest a major problem. The TBN was 0.0; showing no active additive left and that could have also caused some of the wear. Change this oil and check back in ~6,000 mi.

Wow! 0 TBN! You brave soul

I would never go 8k on conventional with all short trips...

WOW! At least you know you went too far. Moly and sodium contents probably indicate a Mobil oil, which is is what most Honda dealers use. You are braver than I am to take an OCI that far with frequent short trips. Wear metals were across the board elevated, but not alarming. A very good UOA all things considered. Thanks for sharing.

So this oil has been in for nearly 16 months and 8000 miles? Wow. I would run the next oil fill for a short interval to clean out any accumulated sludge or deposits.

Not brave, foolhardy. Standard OCI for the Honda is 10k / 1 year, severe service (which is what I should have been using) is 5k / 6 months.

But the real relevant dates are as follows -
Last oil change - 3/17/07
Joined BITOG - 12/30/07
Started oil analysis - 6/21/08

Another pertinent fact is that this represents the difference between just watching the maintenance indicator vice actually paying attention to your OCI's

All in all though, it's not as bad as one might expect. I was particularly surprised at the lack of water or fuel contamination.

We can't be too critical of the oil when it has been for 16 months.

Cr., Al., Fe., Si. obviously indicate upper cyl wear due to dirt. And although the K is low..its more than 2 = coolant.

It will live. Check the air filters as was suggested ..6 months isn't a bad starting point for future sampling. One year probably wouldn't be out of whack.

Track your fuel economy. You're surely passing more gallons of fuel through the engine than you would in a more favorable service.

No criticism of the oil, get it out sooner, it can't change itself!

Try Motorcraft 5w-20 at 5 month OCI.

Yeah, man. When in doubt;dump it out! Give the car a break and just do 6 month ocis.

Conventional oil every 6 months is a safe bet, or M1 EP/Amsoil once a year.

synthetic once a YEAR????

the aunt millie tests were for 5 years, and the oil was still in good shape on short trips, and that was 1998 vintage oil.

this dino probably would have gone for a year just fine. a synthetic would probably be good for 10k or 5 years. when did we become so conservative on oil?

It's not an OLM per se, but a "Maintenance Required" light triggered solely by mileage. It starts lingering and flashing at 8k and stays on constantly at 10k.

5 years!!!I don't date beautiful ladies that long! I'm certainly throwing the old oil out long before.
