Honda 2.4 known for oil burning?

My aunt has a 2003 Accord with the 2.4. Yesterday, she said the oil light came on. She called my uncle who looked at it and found that it was about 3 quarts low.

She said she just had the oil changed recently, within about 2k miles. She has always taken it to the dealer and had it serviced very regularly. The dealer probably uses whatever bulk oil they have, I'm assuming 5w20.

We're pretty sure it's not leaking, since she said she doesn't have any oil drops anywhere, but we'll probably get it checked out soon to make sure. The car only has about 45k miles on it.

Not normal, imo.

After oil is that low, I say drain it, as the remaining stuff is oxidized and concentrated contaminates. Use a 10w30 for now.

They may not have given the crankcase an adequate fill when they changed the oil.
A 45K (or 145K) Honda doesn't have that kind of consumption unless something is seriously wrong.
I would change the oil and ensure that it gets five full quarts.
I would then monitor consumption.

Wow that's alot of oil to burn in a short period of time (roughly a quart every 650 miles). I'd say either the dealer dropped the ball, and did not fill it up all the way, or something is waaayyyy wrong.

I. being retired and nothing better to do, would go back to the dealer's service department and tell him this story and demand reimbursement for 3 quarts of oil. I would take the empty quart containers with me. The service guy probably just dialed the incorrect amount of oil on that automatic dispenser that many of them use. Good service would have entailed checking the oil level on the dipstick.

No need for any changes at all. I do agree just go ahead and change the oil. I would not go to a 10w30 as you have no idea what is going on. My 2002 accord 2.3 liter uses no oil in 15k oil changes. No oil usage is normal for what have seen in Honda's, and I have put close to a million miles on them combined or over. My last accord had 260k on it with zero oil usage during 10k OCI's. I say use what the manufacture calls for which should be 5w-20 watch the oil level close... it should be easy to check for oil leaks if you don't have a concrete/paved drive put a big piece of cardboard under it.

I have found any oil meeting OEM specifications works superb in our Honda's, it's hard to justify synthetic cost over conventional with the long drain intervals recommended by the manufacture as well.

My '02 Accord has 95k on it and has not used/burned/leaked a drop of oil since we bought it in 2006. Change what's left with 5-20 and monitor it closely. Throw a big piece of cardboard down if you don't have a clean spot where you park it regularly.

it's actually quite common for the 2.4l k-series engine to consume oil. if you do some online research you will find allot of complaints/cases of the issue.

it will need a new short block if it is using that much oil.

my 05 stays full on the stick through 5K miles-then the level starts dropping to almost a half quart low at 7500 miles

sounds liek a dealer issue

I have two Hondas with the 2.4L and neither use a drop of oil between oil changes. One of the best engines I've ever had.
