During the sale at BL i bought a lot of CD2 and i would like to use them on my new 2007 Honda Civic LX.

I know the recommended weight for the car is 0w-20 and Im in Atlanta, GA so the temps are fairly warm and i would like to add a half bottle of CD2 to my OCI.

I plan to use Castrol GTX 0w-20 and 1/2 bottle of CD2
What do you think of adding SLOB to the oil for my 2007 Civic ?

SLOB = CD-2 Street Legal High Performance Oil Boost

That will work just fine. We have not seen anything negative happen from useing Slob. It does not matter what viscosity you add Slob to it will still have the same overall effect. You could put 15W40 in that Honda and it would not cause any damage so 1/2 bottle of Slob is not going to hurt it either!

Wouldnt it increase the weight a small amount ?
Im actually thinking of going to 0w or 5w30

You must mean 5W-20 GTX, not 0W-20.

There is no good reason to add SLOB to a well formulated modern motor oil in a modern Honda.

Yes, It will increase the viscosity a little bit but it is not going to cause any harm. If I stick a sheet of college rule note book paper under the insole of your left shoe one layer thick it is not going to trough your ballance off! The noise level of you propreception and mechanoreceptors when wrapped in a paded shoe is greater then the difference caused by the note book paper. Like wise the difference in viscosity caused by adding Slob is in the noise floor of how thick a viscosity the engine can handle with no pumping, cavitation or flow issue's to bearing or other part's. The margin between too thick versus too thin is very wide it is not as narrow as some moron on this site would have you belive! This is why we see engines that have gone from 5W20 to 5W40 and back to 5W20 with no significant change in wear patern or amounts of wear metal's total.

We have plenty of UOA where SLOB has been added and no negative impact was demonstrated. As to the asseration that their is no need to ever add any additive to your oil that too is opion and is not supported by fact's easily available on bitog! I guess LC20,Auto-Rx, N131,SX-UP and a few other's have no value!Personely I think any one that has nothing to add beside "What does the manual say?" or "You should not add anything to your oil!" should really not belong to a site like bitog. Now if they were dropping tons of UOA showing that their opion at least had some basis in reality that would be different. I have tried Auto-Rx,LC,SX-UP,and other additives and have posted results in UOA setion for some of them. So my opion are based on my personel results and those of other members.I tried 0W30 when that was the thinest thing available nationaly and things as thick as 15W40 and 5W40. those additives that are discourged are one's that have shown horrable UOA results in the past.

We also have yet to see a bad UOA on any vechile recomending 5W20 when anything thicker is used no matter if it was 5W30 or 5W40! In some case's we have seen vechiles that recomend heavier viscosities like 10W60 do fine on oW20 and 5W20.Their is no universal truth when it comes to oil's and aftermarket additives. You have to be willing to do some research and educate yourself. You have to willing to make adjustments to how you think. If you are not then this site is not the place for you.I think this site is going to the dog's since anyone and their mom can pipe up with any dim witted opion they have even if they have no fact's or personel experince to back it up.Never mind that you can always check the archives to see what has already been done! I know the search function suck's but it is still present unlike the edit function! Sometimes before fireing off a responce uninformed a little bit of research might be in order.blanket statements are an excuse not to think. I think our society has more then enough non-thinker's tht need to have the fact's real or imagined spoon feed to them and that this site should not be a mirror of that! This site should be about independent thought supported by sound conjecture and some limited but cost effective measurement tool's like UOA. This site should be about understanding what is going on with the chemistry of your oil and the various additives available onthe market. I will not let the lowest common denominator crowd take over a site I have enjowed for far too long. Their is a reason why we seldom see post's fromt he great member that really helped develop the charter and identity of this site. It is becuase of all the midless banter and phyco-babble.I you have a thought or idea test it and then write to the rest of us about it. If it proves to be wrong we all learn something and if it is correct we all learn something. No one learn's anything and nothing get's proven by doing nothing, takeing no risk and doing as the masses do!

very well said ^^^^
I too am learning and like to cont but taking little steps so i dont make a mistake that kills an engine or transmission because these cars are planned for longterm.

I was thinking the opposite
use it for the newer cars so that the engine dont get old as quick.

I got the SLOB from BigLots awhile back - i helped the mgr bring it to the register from the back warehouse

Slob doesn't contain radioactive ingredients, chlorine, or other whacky stuff.
It has what is used in normal oils.
Of course it is not necessary, but won't hurt and will probably do some good.
I use a little SLOB when I do my oil changes.

What I don't understand is why an additive like Slob is pushed/suggested/used, and yet no evidence that it helps. Lots of comments like "it won't hurt"...ok, fine, but will it help? And will it insure that I can squeeze 300k miles from my car? I'm ignorant of these things, but I can't help but wonder if additives do more for the car owner's phsycy then for the motor ;-)

I do however appreciate lots of the great banter and discussion in this thread, and hope it continues ;-)

I assume its like vitamins
you get regular vitamis through food consumption but a vit pill boosts the regular depletion

I assume SLOB is like a ZDDP boost
As long as its not overused it will help (my assumption)

Well, there's a great body of opinion that it doesn't hurt. "Hey, buy this CD2, buy this SLOB! It's doesn't hurt!" Ringing endorsement, eh? Look, if it's a push rod engine, the zinc is necessary (although I'd run a Rotella T or some such, myself, rather than some additive). Again, "Doesn't/won't/never hurt is not a reason to use the stuff. In a Honda? Can't see the benefit, especially since these are vehicles that aren't hard on the oil, and the manufacturer, as do all of them, actually, recommend no additives be added.

To the CD2/SLOB crowd I ask, what's the base oil? Group 1? II? Synthetic? Not? Who knows, and as such, it ought not be added. Why pollute a great base oil such as an 0W20 with a product whose sole benefit, for want of any information, "doesn't hurt"?

I don't know about that, John Browning. Pretty arrogant statement from a poster (you) that doesn't spell so well, ignores the recommendations of the manufacturer, and while touting the great benefit of a product "that doesn't hurt anything". Is there a place for fortified oils? Sure! More zinc than the GF-4 standard? Absolutely! But via an off the shelf dollar bottle of additive from Big Lots? Well, it "won't HURT" anything, right?

Gimme a break.

I dunno toocrazy, I think JB hit it right on the head. As for the base oil, what does it matter? I haven't yet seen anyone ask "Can I run SLOB 15k miles?" It could be group 0.5 and for the small amount mixed in with a good oil, the difference is going to be negligible. Besides, with the increased anti-oxidant levels, you're pretty safe.

Is SLOB right for everyone? Of course not, what is? But there are situations where it can help, no doubt. What's the difference between a PCMO and SLOB mix or an HDEO? Can you just buy an HDEO? Sure, but what if you don't want to go that thick? I can think of more examples but my point is, yes, Virginia, there can be a good use for SLOB....
