Home Depot forcing delivery

You don't know that. Why create a scenario to make a point? For all you know there could be same-day or next-day delivery. There was an appliance store in our town that would deliver on the same day if the item was purchased before a certain time in the morning, To be fair, the same/next day delivery was for items within a certain distance from the store.

That said, I'd be miffed if I couldn't take my purchase home with me. You did bring up an interesting point though. Maybe some folks damaged their item when taking it themselves, and perhaps tried to blame the store for selling a defective/damaged appliance. That would not surprise me at all.
How do you know I don't know that? Please don't create scenarios for me either....
When I needed a refrigerator a couple years ago I didn't choose Home Depot because delivery dates were out almost 2 weeks and it took a couple weeks to get everything because their in store stock was next to zero.

Who said they had appliances in stock?
They may have had only floor samples for inspection and ALL their appliances come out of a central warehouse.

What comes to my mind are stories (yes, plural) of nice people pulling up and stealing items stored outside.

Also, occurrences of slip+falls, appliance damage and parking lot angst, could have led the store to cease the practice.
Even if they had stock you couldn't take it anyway so it wouldn't matter? I guess gone are the days of your appliance dying and going to the store to get an immediate replacement.

I can't count on Lowe's or Home Depot to get me anything "right now". Experienced this recently with a dryer, with a load of wet clothes in need of drying, so Nebraska Furniture Mart to the rescue. We were up & running in 2 hours.

Our Lowe's about 15 miles away seems to stock more appliances than a lot of places. I ultimately bought at local regional appliance chain called Karl's and got a better deal with next day delivery.

If I have to replace an appliance I go to Lowes. They have a great exchange program if one has problems. In my previous life I was going into Lowes to check over / service returns for resale for the Co. I worked for. The stuff they took back was unbelievable, most did not have defects, mostly pilot error or customer installation issues I assume as no way to verify that.
I had customers relate that HD was not as friendly as Lowes.

I know the thread's a few weeks dormant but I feel like I'm seeing a trend even on small items if HD thinks my local store will deliver it (via gig worker that they use) it won't allow me a true "ship to home" option.

Problem is the gig workers are hardly brain trusts and 50% of the time can't find my place. FedEx and UPS get me the package 100% of the time.....
