Home Depot forcing delivery

Went diswasher shopping the other day and our local Home Depot now says: "Delivery Required" on appliances. The best I could find was a "take me home today" open box buy that was smashed up. I did not buy it.

Perhaps I it has been a while since I've been living under a rock but I don't recall not being able to drive home with the appliance from Lowes, Sears, HD, Best Buy, HH Gregg etc the same day.

The sign did not state how much the delivery fee was but I would think it is extra tacked on to the price of the dishwasher. I own a truck and don't need it delivered.

The smashed one was probably from the last time they let someone take one home themselves.
All jokes aside, it is irritating that they have something in stock and you can't take it home immediately. Instead you may have to wait a week or more for delivery depending on their schedule while you sit without a refrigerator or something.

Lowes has them. If you go to Lowes.com they have a little button you can click on the left of "pick up today".

Having said that, I got a dishwasher from Lowes 6 month ago, and it was delivered (not installed) for free. Costco seems to be the best deal now if they have something you like and are a member. Just got a washer from them.

Last time I bought new big appliances(most from Sears!) the another store here, we had to schedule a pickup time. Maybe the same day if they aren't busy or in a couple days if they are. Delivery was very optional and cost more.

Who said they had appliances in stock?
They may have had only floor samples for inspection and ALL their appliances come out of a central warehouse.

What comes to my mind are stories (yes, plural) of nice people pulling up and stealing items stored outside.

Also, occurrences of slip+falls, appliance damage and parking lot angst, could have led the store to cease the practice.

THink Bosch...solid dishwashers.
My dishwasher is on its last legs. Makes a loud noise at the start of the cycle that eventually goes away once the water starts swishing. I looked at new ones at Lowes and didn't like anything. Didn't see any differences between the $500 and the $1000 dishwashers. They were all a bit chintzy.

I can tell you from experience working for a retailer which sold appliances, that having customers pick them up in store was often a pain. Maximizing square footage on the sales floor means minimizing warehouse space - so when a customer orders a kitchen package and their reno is delayed, that's 4 pallet positions tied up indefinitely.

IMO, focus on the total cost to get it to your door - sort of like buying a car - out the door price wins. Build all the upcharge fee BS into the sale you want, just make sure the number at the bottom line is better than the other retailer.

AKA “ lawyers got involved “ !

My guess is that they are pulling them out of warehouses, and not carrying them in store.
Recently, had to go out and buy my elderly in-laws a washer, and had a heck of a time finding anything in stock.
Finally, after my seventh stop at a Lowes, I found a great deal on a floor model that someone had hidden in the back of the store.
After some time talking to the salesperson, he took me to the horde in the back.

Thats how all my local big box stores all work. They will, however, give the option of "ship to store" and allow pick-up, but usually not the same day. They even load large items in your vehicle to lessen the liability issue as well. Except Costco. If they have it in stock, they load it on a flat cart and you do the rest.

If you are eligible for purchases through AAFES or NEX, I've found the best deal is through their recent partnership with Home Depot. You have to log in to through the Exchange and will link to Home Depot. You will get the 10% off discounted price, no tax, and free delivery. I've used this service thrice over the past year for a stove, dishwasher, and fridge.

This past summer I replaced my 10+ y/o Whirlpool washer & dryer with a Maytag top-loader washer & matching dryer. Ordered through maytag.com and saved a bunch of $, even beat Costco. Last month I went through kitchenaid.com and ordered a Kitchenaid 3-rack dishwasher to replace a 10+ y/o dishwasher. Again, good discounts and good communication through email on order & delivery status. Delivery was handled by J.B. Hunt, and in the case of the washer & dryer, the crew installed new water & drain lines, along with the exhaust duct for the electric dryer. In both cases, used my Capital One cc and got a % back on the purchases. Haul-away fees were $50.

We had a Bosch 10 or 12 year ago. We got decent life out of it but their German complexity makes them unserviceable and unrepairable. When I removed it to put in a new one, the Bosch unit was so densely packed with components that it reminded me of the underhood area of a twin turbo'd, supercharged, 15 liter V12 packed into a the front end of a VW GTI.

I just purchased a 30 gal hot water heater for my place of business from Home Depot. Delivery was free and it came the next day.
Why would I pick it up unless it was a dire emergency which in my case it was not.

They don't stock them in the stores, they're at a central warehouse which is why you can't take it home. They used to stock a couple of the builder basic models but they might have stopped that.
