Could have been a lot worse, the damage is really minor.

I was merging into traffic in my Jeep, pulling my trailer. Was about 3/4 of the way merged when a pickup merged at the same time. There was a gap that I squeezed into but it happened all too fast and then, bam. I guess kind of a mutual at fault. We pulled over and I called the police. Being 110* outside I told the guy I’ll wait in my car. He got in his truck and took off. Being in the world’s slowest vehicle I couldn’t quite catch him, plus a pursuit isn’t the best idea anyways.

The police said he likely doesn’t have insurance. They’ll follow up with me after going to the registered owner’s home. Also doesn’t sound like the driver is the registered owner.

Could have been a lot worse. Mostly just fender flare and bumper corner damage. The bumper might be slightly tweaked but I can straighten that. Also, I think the plastic rash will buff out.

This is the main reason I let the Jeep sit, I don’t want an accident with it. Too sentimental as it was my grandpa’s. It’ll get a full paint job in the next couple years so I’m not too worried either way.

I sure wish this was in the Genesis.

The cop said in all his years, he’s seen less than 10 accidents have a dashcam. Get a dashcam folks! I’ll link mine here. It’s cheap and low profile. I downloaded the video from an app onto my phone right after the accident.

Did the police indicate "who's at fault" either way?? Interesting situation. Thanks for sharing.

Looks to me as if you didn’t see him because he wasn’t in the lane next to you, or even 2 lanes over. He came in hot and at a hard angle, almost like he was darting across from the HOV lane which is 3 lanes over.

I HATE merging into a middle/center lane for this exact reason.

Yeah, I’ve had a few close calls myself. I may be wrong, but I bet that truck shot across from the HOV lane, 3 lanes over from where @Nick1994 was. The “who’s at fault” would be hard to judge, but I would be inclined to think the truck was crossing too many lanes, too fast, based on the video.
Also, just for a laugh in a situation that’s not really funny. He’s listening to Duran Duran’s “Ordinary World”. Just before the truck hit him, the lyrics, “where is the life that I recognize”. Right after it hit him, the lyrics, “Gone away”. 🤔

It doesn’t say on the collision slip I was given, but the cop seemed to be on my side.

Plus, with it being a hit and run, there’s no issue of who is at fault. The officer asked if I wanted to press charges if he’s found, and I told him yes.

Ha! SiriusXM 90s on 9. Wasn’t sure what song that was.

"I guess kind of a mutual at fault."

That's how I saw it. I would just continue on with life. DIY.

But.......people who come here..............never mind. I had a rear ender years ago, yeah, guy took off.........ugg.

Well that’s better than what I did…. zigged instead of zagged and now I’m in a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe rental that I actually rather like. Glad yours wasn’t serious and you’re otherwise okay.View attachment 243556
Whoa, that's a rough one.

Though I've replaced a few Ram bedsides myself, not too hard. I mean it's not an easy job but it's fixable.

I agree on the dash cam. I pass through Phila daily and it’s like the Bronx in 1977. More than 1/3 cars have full tints incl windshield and likely no Reggie no license no insurance no inspection as the vehicle code prohibits cops from initiating traffic stops based on the above.

The tints really guard against cams of any sort. But I still have front/rear on one car and fronts on the other 2. I actually feel “naked” or defenseless without. I have had so many road rage incidents but at least on cam. Also it protects me against red light cam infractions (rather I can replay as none to date) and also school bus reds which randomly turn on (hard to see yellow/red even with true 4k).

Glad to hear your incident was not that bad.

We are believers in dash cams.

The guy in the blue Subaru gave my hysterical teenage daughter a hard time for hitting him, after announcing he was a lawyer. Then asked me for a copy of the video after having trouble with the insurance company of the Chevy that caused the accident. It was a rental, but the guy who rented it was not driving.

Guy was texting and never hit the brakes.

Back in my driver's ed days, the manual had a diagram of half a 6-lane highway (so three lanes in the same direction).

It showed cars in the curb and median lanes, both signalling to move into the middle lane.

The advice was to "BE AWARE OF THIS DANGEROUS SITUATION!"

Good advice!

I narrowly missed possibly killing someone an hour ago. Was merging into the middle lane for left turns and there was an ATV driving recklessly and doing a wheelie coming the other way. It was dark and the ATV's headlight was pointing up in the air so I couldn't see it. I saw something and slowed down and barely missed him. He did another wheelie after this. Glad that my dashcam caught it.
