Hit a raccoon tonight

I've never hit and killed a mammal, but I've creamed a few birds.
I ran over an alligator one night when I was riding my bicycle. Should say I ran into him, not over him.

Well some time ago I ran over a domestic cat. It was going diagonally across a small country road. I picked it up and took it to the local vet but it had already died by the time I arrived there. So then, I had to go back to the house it appeared to be going to when I'd run over it, and ask them if they'd got a cat. It was theirs. I had to tell this woman that I'd just killed her cat. The irony is, that the reason I was driving down the road was to go to the hospital to pick up my father's death certificate.
What a bad day.

Bummer.

Raccoons are just hard to avoid due mainly to the extended families crossing all at once....I've seen groups of 8 or 9 cross in front of me, then another group of 10+ follow them!

And lastly - what is it with rats crossing the roads lately. This place is getting infested!!

Too many rats= too few foxes and coyotes. Or too many lazy cats!

I saw a hit fox last month. And I don't see near the numbers of coyote as in the past. I agree.

If you see a raccoon hit on the road, look around the little ones will be right near by, they will stay with the mother. And usually end up getting killed themselves.

I almost hit a raccoon a couple of months ago... but it got away.

Around here, the turkey vultures will not even touch raccoon. Rabbit disappears within hours.

I know a guy that ran into a Black Bear on his mountain Bike, he ran one way the Bear ran the other!

Went to Bathurst yesterday (60km each way).

There were at least 80 dead roos on the trip.

Holiday weekend, and no-one warned the wildlife.

I nearly ran into a slowly launching turkey vulture a couple of years ago. He was feeding on something recently departed on a downhill S-curve by my house. He heard me coming, took off (they don't launch too well) and I had to dive on the brakes to keep from smacking him in the butt with my windshield. How do you tell that story to the cops or your insurance agent???

Here, wild turkeys are multiplying rapidly, and now we have the hazard of driving into one of the 15 lb low-flying birds as it crosses the road. If it ever happens to me, I'll be backing up and loading it into the car.
