In California??? I start my engines, put my seat belt on and drive. As for local or hyw miles, it makes no difference to me. I do 10K OCIs regardless. Have been doing this since I started using Mobil 1 oils in the 70s, and has worked very well in all types of engines. Also if my cars had OLMs I would no doubt ignore the thing.

I was looking for general rules of thumb to follow that could be applied to most cars. Like half of normal OCI is a pretty common recommendation.


But what is "normal" OCI and on what engine with what oil?
 
City driving is tough on your engine...extended idling, followed by accelerations, then more idling=fuel getting last those rings and getting I. That oil. Plus the cooling system is working overtime to stay at operating temp (more tough conditions for your engine).

Give me highway at 68 mph. Good air flow....little fuel used.....good, consistent rpms=easier job for your oil and engine.
 
City driving is not as hard on the engine as people make it out to be. If everything is properly maintained including the cooling system, and the oil OCI is adjusted (shortened) accordingly, then I truly don't see where the "scare" of city driving is coming from

I agree that city driving, heavy stop and go or constant short trips are much harder on the fluids like coolant, engine and transmission oil and other wear components, but that is why manufacturers have the severe service schedule to change these critical fluids and components earlier. Duty cycle being hard on fluids does not equate to shorter engine life, otherwise why bother with severe service if the designed engine life is still compromised?
