Highway tax refunds

As the gas taxes go up and the gas i use for the OPE becomes more as I drive less, I looked into getting a state tax refund on the gas I use. Seems all I have to do in Illinois is keep track of what I buy and how it's used. Pretty simple as the mower gas I always fill up separate from the cars anyway. Of course there's the 4 page form that needs filling out....

How much fuel are you using that is actually eligible? Seems very small amounts for most people.

I probably use at least 60 gallons a year.

Got it. What is the gasoline tax in Illinois? Google is saying around 45 cents /gallon. So is it worth doing that paperwork and keeping documentation for $30 or less? Still an find interesting though.

It goes up with inflation annually. Going to be $0.666 a gallon 7/1.

That's a lot of work for $40, but if you have the time, have at it.
Many people have applied for motor oil rebates in lower amounts.

They did the opposite thing after Katrina in 2005-- you could buy red diesel then fill out a form to pay the taxes on it correctly.

Absolutely, and I thought about that during my original post. It boils down to time/effort to reward. If I can submit an oil rebate for $20 and it takes about 5 minutes, I consider that worthwhile. The OP stating there's 4 pages of government paperwork and you need to document how the fuel is used, so the value proposition is under question. May still be worthwhile - I don't know enough about it to have a view either way.

Red team rolled out a similar tax increase in MO couple years ago. I did it for one year but it's just annoying enough filling out address, company, amounts, save receipts, etc. that it isn't worth the savings. Instead continue to use gasbuddy etc. For MO we only get a portion of taxes paid for On Highway while Off Highway (Think Lawnmowers) we get all tax refunded.

Currently only get $0.075 a gallon for On Highway. :(

"Please note: Missouri’s motor fuel tax rate will increase by 2.5 cents per gallon annually on July 1 until it reaches 29.5 cents in July 2025. Under SB 262, you may request a refund of theMissouri motor fuel tax increase paid each year: 2.5 cents in 2022, 5 cents in 2023, 7.5 cents in2024, 10 cents in 2025, and then 12.5 cents in 2026 and each year after."

I use Caseys gas usually and they keep track of my purchases and I keep the OPE to a separate fill and CC charge. The form is all inclusive for any industry that uses taxed gasoline or other petroleum products, hence it's length. So OPE equipment is just a few checks for me. A commercial service would have a lot more to do as they require acreage numbers. PDF so it can be filled online.

LOL they tell those who bought undyed diesel to suck it up next time and get the right stuff.....

As a farmer am I allowed to claim a refund for gasoline I use in my tractor? Am I allowed to claim a refund on undyed diesel I use in my tractor?

A claim for the tax you paid on the gasoline can be submitted. You cannot submit a claim for the undyed diesel. You should use dyed diesel in your tractors.

Seeing as Mobil 1 has dropped out of the race for rebates.....

How is one to get "Dyed Diesel Fuel" for tractor if none is available locally? You'd have to get non-dyde but won't get any credit refund though. Typical nonsense.

I just noticed they are allowing us to upload an excel spreadsheet that is filled out w/all the details I mentioned previously. A little easier I suppose.

Most farmers get their fuel delivered on site or in the field. I had no problem getting dyed diesel for my fuel oil every year.

Ah, you have a point there. That is something I forget & gramps had MFA bring out Gasoline for the tank on the farm.

Yes, but motor oil rebates are also not giving state employees another reason to come looking into your finances. They really dislike releasing money back to the people. For $40/yr keeping track of the receipts and time to fill paperwork, it’s water under the bridge to me.

“The nail that stands up gets hammered down.” Just look at the court headlines from NY, GA, FL, and D.C. for proof.
