High temp exhaust coating a cat converter (exterior) ok?

Hello BITOGers,

I am getting a CARB cat since I've had a frequently occurring P0420 code pop up on a OBD scan gauge. No hard CEL sets though.

Is it beneficial or detrimental to exhaust coat a cat for corrosion prevention and limit heat radiating into cabin? Most direct-fit cats do not have a factory-like heat shield.

The heat shield they come with will be fine :)

However, the exhaust rusts from the inside out. The best thing you can do is make sure there is a hole drilled at the bottom of the muffler, so the moisture can drain. Most OE mufflers have a hole drilled, but aftermarket mufflers usually don't.

The rust will usually happen where the pipe is welded to the flange. Perhaps some high-temp muffler cement or something might work. Some of those are good to 2000F

I think you read too fast, ease up on the caffeine =) Most direct-fit options do not come with a heat shield and I'm talking about the catalytic converter. You obviously cannot spray anything inside the cats nor drill holes.

Thanks for the weld advice though brotha!

Being in the Rust Belt, I paint whatever I can with 2000 degree paint. Also drill weep holes in the muffler, if not equipped. I try anything to protect exhaust system from road salt. Paint doesn't last too long on the CATS, so I just re-spray them every so often

Im sorry to hear that you have to replace it instead of just deleting it. A heat paint probably won't solve the floorboard heating but you could go to a local salvage yard and rip some factory heat shielding from a newer car or just use header wrap.
