High Sulfated Ash in extended drain oils?

For HDEO the sulfated ash is usually right around 1. I am looking for the best specs for an extended drain 15w40 for diesels, and I came across a lucas oil:

"SAE 15w40 Magnum High TBN Long Drain Truck Oil"

I know lucas has a good rep as far as oil stabilizers and additives, but how do their finished products stack up. The PDS seems good except the Sulfated Ash is 1.58. That seems really high. Wouldn't high sulfated ash content like 1.58 lead to extra sludge and deposits, and wouldn't that lead to shorter drain intervals?

What is the ideal sulfated ash for extended drain intervals in buses and truck tractors running on diesel

No I guess I didn't! I probably am just thinking of all the commercials I have seen while watching truck racing on the SPEED channel. I guess I'm just a stupid gullible consumer. Anyways, I wasn't planning on running the lucas oil, I just was unsure if a 1.58 sulfated ash would be acceptable for extended drain, or if the oil would become to "dirty" over long OCI's
 
Many high quality MB228.5 oils have 1.8 to 1.9% SA. Most 4 strokes will do fine on 1.5 to 2.0%.

A lot of the high SA oils have high doses of magnesium which is an alternative to calcium. You'll see magnesium in a lot of HDEO as it retains TBN very well. Theory is it is not as soft as calcium and does a better job on keeping contaminants in suspension.

Lucas oil stabilizer and oil additives are snake oil. The oil stabilizer is just a thick 40wr oil with little additives.
 
So for modern diesel engines with EGR and DPF the ideal sulfated ash is 1%? Is that correct? but with older diesels 1-2% is ok? and for CNG I would need a low ash (low SAPS) like .5-.7?
 
The big low ash user was the 2 cycle Detroit Diesel. High ash oils resulted in valve stem deposits (four relatively small valves per cylinder) that would ultimately hold the valve open for long enough to burn the face.

The fleet I worked for switched from a low ash 40 wt. to a high ash 15w40. Serious overtime resulted.
 
Sulfated ash is an artifact of the lab test. Sulfuric acid is added to an oil sample, it is baked, more sulfuric acid added, baked again, then it is weighed. SA from magnesium is abrasive; SA from calcium is soft and not abrasive. The simple test doesn't tell you the whole story. Look at the total result of engine protection with an oil, not just one aspect of the lab test. 15w40 does not belong in any 2-stroke Detroit Diesel engine. There are some straight weight 30 & 40 wt oils with a higher SA level that deliver superior results than the usual CF-2 oils--you gott'a look at the whole package.

I'm not aware of any Lucas products worth their price.

The problem was a manager that chose to believe the salesman buying lunch instead of the operators' manual. It happens. Often.
