Yes I know. We had a guy here once with a whole thread about running his engine with canola oil. He tried to make sense of that.

Never canola. Only vegetable or peanut. The smell is much better...

Is this "extreme" driving conditions? Or is the highway cruising easy on the engine and oil?

I should add, seems like the flyover states always have a 20+mph headwind adding engine load...

I would ditch the x20 during summer & your driving conditions. I'm sure if you look, Toyota OM allows/recommends heavier oil. Something like "more suitable ..."

2GR-FE engine I have in SIenna in Australia is allowed to use 20W50.

A long journey by itself is not stressful if speeds are steady.

High temperatures ARE stressful.

Climbing mountains IS stressful.

Pulling a load like a trailer IS stressful.

I wouldn't be concerned about how the oil holds up as much as I would be concerned about breaking the oil film and its effect on bearings.

I put a 0W-20 synthetic in my wife's car but run the same oil in 5w30 in my own because of the mountain climbing, high engine speeds, and high temperatures that I do.
