Hello all-
Just bought a 2004 Corolla. Car had 4 miles on it when purchased, now has 175. It has started making a high pitched screeching. The sound is very random, in and out. Oil is fine, all fluids ok. I have heard this may be due to a belt issue or a water pump problem. The sound is coming from that side of the engine. Going for a diagnostic drive at the dealer tonight and was wondering what others may think based on the little I provided. Thanks for the input.

I have an 01 Corolla and have had no issues to date. I assume that your 04 has the single serpentine belt for all accessories as does mine. Does the belt seem tight enough to you if you checked it? It could just be the belt tensioner although that is unusual. I'd be surprised at a water pump failure this early on as well!

So I got the diagnosis of what could possibly be making the sound I described above. Turns out to be that the right front backplate was touching the rotor and making the sound. Went for a ride with the mechanic, the sound came about (after 5 minutes of driving and waiting) and he heard it and said he thought it was the backplate and rotor - possibly a rock inbetween or something else. 5 minutes on the lift and he was done and we were out of there. Thanks again for the input and jokes ;~)
