Hi,

As some know, Im flushing, and reflushing, and reflushing coolant in my 91 BMW 318i... Im going to G-05, and want to have all last traces of the old stuff out.

Anyway, yesterday, I did a number of flushes of the radiator - its about 50% each time. I suppose I could have spilled some coolant, or even a drop of oil (I checked my oil and a drop may have fallen off???) on my belts, all I know is that I got this TERRIBLE noise from one of my belts - either the alternator or the water pump belt made a very odd screeching type noise.

The noise sounded to me like a cross between whenyou have noisy tires on a concrete highway, and when you lock up your brakes on dry pavement... I popped the hood and listened, it was even worse (of course) from right under the hood.

At first startup, I heard it... it was very intermittent as I sat there at idle and listened for it. I found that goosing the throttle slightly made it come back - I think 1900 RPM is the point where it occurs, FWIW.

By the time I drove to work, it seemed to be gone - I couldnt get it to reproduce. It was very strange though - so loud and shreeky, Id never heard such a thing before... definitely not a PS pump type of noise, more of a tire lockup noise.

Do you think it was just some glycol on the belt, or should I be worried??? I didnt have a mechanic's stethescope, and unfortunately the WP and alternator are right next to each other... so Im hoping it is a belt noise and not the WP acting strange due to coolant change.

Any insight would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

JMH

I guess you need to keep your eye on it. Is the belt tightened properly? The alternator will be more of a load at startup than while running (in most cases). Certainly look for oil or AF on the belt.
