I'm interested in what type of oil and filters some others are using in their high-performance pickup diesels.

Terry is helping me greatly to get the wear metals down in my Duramax, but I'm just curious about the subject.

My Duramax is running approximately 400 RWHP as a daily driver, and we're having troubles with oil handling the heat associated.

Comments?

I don't quite have 400 yet but i'm not too far with my 2001 Ford F250 with 7.3 PSD. I use Schaeffer's Supreme 9000 5w-40 with good results. I would think Schaeffer's or Redline would be your best bet to "handling the heat associated" since they have higher HTHS numbers compared to other HDEO's.

I have a 2001 7.3 F350 that is running about 325hp (much more soon to come)and used to pull hard. This truck has seen much of it's life at WOT. Been running Delo 400 15w40 since new and have always seen excellent UOAs.

I was thinking of trying Schaeffer's as I know it is a good product, however the Delo is quickly and inexpensivly accessable to me.

This is not my truck, but yesterday I looked at a 95 Ford PSD that is highly modified. Twin Turbo's and dual High Pressure Oil Pumps, Stage III injectors and the list goes on. He runs nothing but 15W40 Schaeffers in the engine and Schaeffers Transmission fluid.

I just switched my 01 PSD to Schaeffers 15W40. This truck is not modified.

I had the 15W40 on hand, but will be switching to 5W40 Schaeffers on the next change on both my trucks.

Sounds like you looked at Cale's truck. As in Brian's son from BTS in Lead Hill AR.

My 95 E40D is now putting power to the ground instead of slipping. But the engine is getting some help from the new 4 position Shift on the Fly Chip. Also the transmission now sports an almost 4R100 look internally and lubed with Schaeffers transmission fluid. Man, what a smooth running transmission, no slippage, just direct shifts.

Yeah, that DP-tuner chip should rock your PSD. How you like the chip so far? I definately would like to do the BTS transmission thing myself, I only know of one person that was happier with somebody elses work. Must be nice living in the same state.

The chip works great, and the smoke is tuned out with proper timing. BTS is about 110 miles from here. I had a snap ring internally come loose in my Ford original trans, that is why the repair happened. But I am really thrilled. I can take off in second gear now with as much power as I had prior in low. Just amazing how much a well built trans can do for a vehicle.

Sorry Coyotekid for going so far off topic.

The best filters are the Fleetguard Stratapore (if available for your engine), regular Fleetguard, ACDelco, WIX, Baldwin, Donaldson.

The best oil is the best diesel 5W-40 you can find, and Terry knows the most about that. I really like the Schaeffer products.

No problem at all on going off topic...I love a good diesel discussion!

I may have to give Schaeffers a try if the Redline doesn't really improve my oil analysis.

I've been using Delvac 1 5W-40, but it just can't stand up to this engine in it's current configuration. On the flip side, my dad receives excellent UOA's in his Duramax, but it is unmodified.

The Mobil 1 M303 filter is what I've been using--it's supposedly a great filter for this particular application. Any comments on that one?

I recommend the Fleetguard LF3679 instead and back it up with bypass filtration.

Coyotekid, the 03 LB7 that I had was running everyday on a 475hp single box tune. I was running a VA stacked on top pushing well over 500 to the ground. What I found with the Delvac 1 UOA never looked to promising. With just a PF 2232 oil filter and Delo 400 produced the best UOA on the engine. I was one of people who experienced lower operating oil pressure with the 5w40 vs. 15w40. This may of been part of the contributing factors in higher metal counts.

Kenneth,

Just curious .. what wear metal levels you were seeing with the D1 in your 03 LB7 Duramax? I’ve had good UOA’s with D1 and M1 T&SUV in my 03 LB7 Dmax (with stock tune) using Baldwin B1441 full-flow filters and and an Oil Guard Bypass since new. (Click here for UOA’s to date)

I also see about 5psi lower oil pressure with the 5W40 compared to the DELO and AMSOIL 15w40 I used for the first 3 changes (25psi hot idle, 60-65psi hot @ 2000rpm). I attributed the difference to the improved flow characteristics of the 5w40 D1 (??)

Delo...........Delvac 1
FE 7............20
PB 2.............7
CU 3............14
CR 0.............1
SN 7.............8
AL 1.............2

This are averages of metal counts from Delo UOA and the Delvac 1.
Due to high output and amount of fuel being injected. All samples are 100-115 hours of run time. With none of the samples fuel dillution was up to 1%.

Oil pressure with 5W40 after hard run (idle would be down to 15 psi and 55-60 @2000 rpm).

Kenneth,

Thanks for the data! The DELO performed very well compared to the D1 with the extra power you were making ... Do you think the Moly in the DELO is a factor?

smile.gif

Got same basic results with just CI-4 vs. the CI-4+. The moly did not seem to be what made the difference.
Both oils held viscosity right dead on.
