i have a 95" jeep wrangler and have replaced the sender unit and sensor, but the oil pressure is normal at idle but when i start it, and when i give it a little gas the pressure goes off the charts, there are no abnormal sounds when idling or when running, i was wondering if there was anything else the problem could besides the actual guage itself.

Not sure I will be much help, but have a few questions:

What is "normal" pressure for a '95 Wrangler? Normal pressure for my '95 F150 is 40 - 60 psi at 2000 rpm hot.

When did this situation begin? Was it after an oil change?

What grade (weight) oil are you running in it?

Off the charts, meaning pegs the needle?

Your oil pressure should peak out at 75 lb. That's the pressure relief setting for as far back as I can find. Your peak oil pressure may be less due to pump volume, but that is the relief setting.

If your oil pressure, when warm, continues to climb as you go faster, and never "peaks out", then you may have a stuck relief valve in the oil pump.

As TallPaul asks, what is/are your pressure(s)? You'll probably be giving "guesstimates" since I don't think the YJ, like the TJ, gives more than ZERO and 80 as bottom and top references.

yeah the highest it goes is 80 and it is normally about 40-60 hot i did change the oil filter and oil to a 1030 synthetic after i bought it when i replaced the sending unit and sensor but im not sure if the previous owner used synthetic or not and this started happening about two weeks ago and ive had it for about 2-3 months, and its not making any unusual noises and it tops out when i give it even a little gas

Okay..if I read that correctly, you had normal 40-60 psi hot (good pressure btw) and then out of nowhere you have a normal baseline figure (still 40??) and then with a blip of the throttle, it pegs the meter

If the baseline reading is about the same ..and the peak number is elevated, then I'd say that the relief valve may be stuck. It's not a very common occurance ..but it has happened.

I would verify the reading with a mechanical gauge. If your dash gauge is telling the real deal then I would plan on either getting the pan pulled and swapping out the oil pump (not all that bad on a jeep). You probably would be well served with seeing if Auto-Rx would free this up.

I would carry a spare oil filter in the jeep and perhaps extra oil (a couple of quarts). This will allow you to do something if the filter bursts (it's been known to happen in rare instances).

There's not much else to do. You are already using a 30 weight. You could go to a 20 weight for the time it takes you to take care of this.

After this is resoved (or while this is being resolved), check the bottom of your distributor to assure that the oil pump drive isn't distorted (rounded out). That's why the relief is set @ 75 lb ..to limit the shaft stress on the drive.
