I switched my '92 Lumina with 110k miles over to Mobil 1 5w30 "Newer Vehicle Formula" about 500 miles ago. I used to run Havoline or Pennzoil Conventional 5w30.
The engine has had a leak at the front damper seal for the past 5 or 6 years...always damp around the chassis, blows all over the transmission pan and would drip off of the engine drain plug, and would leave four of five quarter-sized spots on the driveway.
I was expecting the leak to worsen a bit or at least remain the same when changing over to synthetic. I need to really wash down the area to verfy this, but it seems to have stopped completely. There's been no leakage onto the driveway since the change over. No drips hanging off the engine or chassis either.
This seems to contradict all I've read here and the urban myth that synthetic causes leaks in high mileage engines.
This might be short-lived, but it's nice not to be leaking all over the driveway.
