High Mileage or Regular Synthetic

At what mileage is it a good idea to start running a HM synthetic over a regular synthetic?
I have a 75K mile Durango that I am switching to Penz. Ultra (from Dino). Just thinking that may be I should be going with Mobil 1 High Mileage instead....

In my opinion, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Regular synthetic is good stuff for the life of your engine as long as you are keeping up with your OCIs. If you begin having a problem with oil consumption, then go with a HM synthetic. Otherwise, keep using the regular synthetic.

Also, I would like to add that sometimes when you change oil types or brands, you may have consumption (a quart or so) during the first OCI while your rings re-seat.

I agree, I have never gone to a HM synthetic, but I have only gone to about 160,000 miles on my cars.

If what you have been doing is working...why change it?

HM would be just fine though.

Stick with the Pennzoil Ultra. I switched to a synthetic on my car at 110,000 miles with no problems. The "high-mileage" synthetic from Mobil 1 is just marketing to confuse the buyer. As long as your Durango is not leaking oil by the quarts, don't waste your money on the HM formula. Pennzoil Ultra is great oil; use it with confidence!

When it starts to leak or the seals might be losing some elasticity. Other than that, there probably isn't a good reason to use high mileage oil in a car that's been well maintained...

Especially in the advent of the GF-5/SN oils and GM's Dexos 1/2 requirements, which mandate increase seal conditioning agents in regular oil...

I have used Mobil 1 High Mileage oils in my classic cars that are 40 years old with 30K miles+. Also have used Mobil 1 High Mileage oils in new cars with 5K miles on them. May be Mobils best oils because of the add packs.... Do not be afraid to use Mobil 1 High Mileage oils because some people here have little experience using them. I have used them in $150,000 cars and also newer low mileage daily drivers.

I agree, I use Mobil 1 High Mileage for the add pack, not because my car has 109,000 miles on it. Mobil 1 is good, Mobil 1 High Mileage is awesome, in terms of its add pack. I also like the fact that Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30 has an HTHS of 3.4.

Then again if you want a High Mileage oil and want to run Pennzoil, try Pennzoil High Mileage.

Both oil's are out standing with great specs pic one go with it.

I'm fond of Mobil's HM line because of the API SL rating and it has a beautiful add pack.

either oil is good.

I agree.
Don't get sucked into the marketing schemes of some oil companies. High Mileage oils are basically somewhat thicker 30wt oils that they charge a premium price for; they don't cost anymore to make.

At least at Walmart, there is no premium for Mobil 1 High Mileage. M1 and High Mileage are priced identically.

just came back from wallmart - Mobil 1 High Mileage is actually 4 bucks cheaper than pennzoil ultra!!!

I have a 3.9L Dakota I use for plowing my driveway I used Pennzoil High Mileage and was very happy with it, little smoke out of the tail pipe and an occasional leak on the garage floor, I did not put many miles on it so I decided to go to one oil change a year so I decided to go with Mobil 1 High Mileage since they recommended 7,500 miles or a 1 year OCI and it was a synthetic so I thought a 1 year OCI would be great, now my tail pipe smokes like crazy and I have many drops of oil on the garage floor, just my experience take it for what it is.
