I believe I've read here it was a compromise between factions at Valvoline that wanted to market it as an oil for cars with 50,000 miles or an oil for cars with 100,000 miles...

I had a Valvoline tech guy said they don't use any seal conditioners that "swell" the seals. Their proprietary seal conditioners more or less clean and maintain the elatisicyt.
