Hello everyone.

It just checked my oil level today, and it seems that I've burned 1/4qt of oil in two months. Does this mean it's time to switch to high mileage? I'm using 5w-30 right now... Should I also use a heavier oil?

Also, which brand? I know this is kind of an opinion, but there should be one brand with cheap, solid high mileage with like a 5k OCI. I will only be using conventional high mileage, not synthetic.

Thanks

All engines use oil...it's just a matter of rate...1QT per 7-8,000 is very low consumption...1/4 QT? And you're worried about it? Don't be!

How many miles...typical would be about 2,000 during that time...so, using at your rate, that's 1QT every 8,000...

QS Defy is a high mileage oil at a good price. I've used it in a '95 Sube Legacy and have minimal consumption over 6k miles.

However, with 6-700 miles over 2 months you may have fuel dilution in your oil if this is done in short trips. JMO

Is there any way I can check for this without a UOA?

I can't really afford a UOA that's why I ask

whats the milage on this car?

burning .25-.5 for 1500ish isnt bad if you have around 120k on the car....

some engines burn more , some less.

you dont need to switch to high milage if your using cheap and effective dino like castrol.high milage could damage ur seals and ur forced to use it for rest of your life.

for blackfriday go to pepboys pick up 20qt of oil and 4 filter for $ 24 afterrebate .... 10 qt of castrol, 10 of p yellow bottle...at this price its not worth it...

The car has about 113k miles. I bought it used 9 months ago, and it had 109k on it then. I don't do a TON of driving, and it's mostly city. Highway is rare.

There is no need to slow anything down. You don't have a problem.

There are many other things to obsess about...

My truck leaks more than that. It has had a rear main seal leak since 1998...150,000 miles while leaking a QT every 1,500 - 2,000.

I'll fix it when it gets bad enough to worry about....

Work with me on the math here: 1QT every 2K. Oil change every 6K. So, 2 extra QTs every OCI and there have been 25 OCI since it started.

That's 50 extra QTs over 14 years... And I bought the Castrol for $1.98/QT... So this "problem" has cost me a latte each year...yeah, I am willing to lose sleep over that!

I hear it all the time from honda and toyota owners.. "it's a honda! this should never happen!" I laugh.
cars use up oil, sometimes you'll never know, sometimes it'll be obvious.. 1/4qt in 700 miles is nothing. so possibly a quart every 3000 miles.. you're in great shape.

Old wives tale... High mileage oil isn't going to do harm, I have switched back and forth without issues...

X2. No problem with seals or switching.

To the OP, I've used SuperTech 10W30 HM with good results, however, given your consumption, I would continue using conventional 5W30. As stated, 1/4 qt in 700 miles isn't bad at all.

Okay thanks. I'll wait for a good deal on oil since my change won't be necessary until... January or February. Thanks everyone
