high mileage oil for 2.5l VW?

There is Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40.

How many miles are we talking about? I wouldn't bother with a High Mileage oil unless it's leaking and burning a lot, or if you're well over 200k.

Does it consume or leak? What makes you think you need one at all?

I agree though about the HM 10w-40, as it is an ACEA A3 oil.

This car has 143k on it. Not really sure on the maint history. However just recently I checked the oil and it was nearly 4qts low on a 6.3qt sump. This oil change has 6k on it and vw recommends 10k. I *think* that the oil change place used Amsoil XL 5w30 from the receipt. Doesn't seem yo be burning and I don't see any visible leaks. My plan was to do the change myself and monitor it. Too many variables on it right now, but that is a lot of oil loss/use so I was looking for a high mileage option.

In addition, Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 meets ACEA A3, too.

Both are probably less than ideal for a Detroit winter.

Try Mobil 1 0W40 or Shell Rotella T6 5W40.

I'd stick with an approved 5w40 for now. Monitor it for the next change interval and see how it does.

Some readily available 502/505 approved oils:

Mobil 1 0w40
Valvoline SynPower 5w40
Castrol Edge 5w40
Castrol Edge 0w40
Castrol Edge 0w30

Thought so, but the last bottle I saw said a1 and a5...

With an HT/HS of 3.5cP, it can't be A1/A5...

Are you sure you weren't looking at the 5w30 grade instead?

That's my plan. Thinking either the M1 or Rotella. This is the firt VW experience and I don't now too much about them but I was told that these 2.5l engine have tendancy to consume some oil. At this rate there is no way it would make it to 10k. It would run out of oil and blow up lol

Whatever you do, stay away from Castrol 5W40. Although that engine is not hard on oil like 2.0T, that oil is on low end quality when it comes to Euro oils.
Considering engine is either burning oil or maybe leaking, I would go with M1 since it is W40, and much better then Valvoline 5W40, and it is VW approved, unlike Rotella (which is though, a very good oil).

Not arguing with the Castrol comments, but isn't the Castrol 5w40 what VW actually recommends using?

After doing some reading about the 502.xx specs, I doesn't seem like it is as important with this engine and the fact that it is out of warranty. My easy local choices are the Mobil 1 0w40, Rotella 5w40, and Delo 400LE 5w40.

The Delo is the least expensive and I would think would do the trick. Especially since I need to do a fresh change and monitor. Saving a few bucks always helps.

Yes they use it. It is cheapest option for them!
Castrol 5W40 does not meet MB 229.5, only MB 229.3, which means it leaves much more deposits then Mobil 1 or GC or BC.

Not a big deal for a port injection engine. Fuel detergents is the key for the 2.5 to keep the intake valves clean.

I know English is not your first language (it's not mine either), but the phrase you're looking for is "of course," not "off course." Not trying to poke fun. Just trying to help as I see you use this phrase often and it actually has a completely different meaning.
