High(ish) rpm oil filter

I have a 1987 Toyota mr2 with a 4age engine. Redline is around 7500rpm. I do take it to 7000+rpm pretty routinely, which makes me wonder if I am using the right oil filter for the application. I am using Mobil 1 Extended Performance filters, which I am led to believe are quite good. But I'm not running a 15k OCI, more like 5-6k. Is there an oil filter that would be better suited to this application? (Daily driven, frequently redlined, 5-6000 mile OCI) I'm not too worried about price, I just want the best I can get.

Thank you.

Bosch Distance Plus filters might be a good solution for you.

They have an extra thick can and plenty of media to hold dirt and contaminants.

I use them on my son's Mazda RX8 that sees 8,500 - 9,000 RPM every now and then.

I think, if you compare the quality and selection of good oil filters today to what was available on the shelf back in 1987, nearly anything made today will be an improvement (in things like construction quality, filter media, etc). The Mobil 1 filters you're using are great. So are the Fram Ultras.

Mobil 1, Bosch Distance Plus, Fram Ultra and Tough Guard, Wix ... are all good. I rev my S2000 to 7500-8200 RPM daily too, it currently has Honda OEM filter and I couldn't detect any problem with it at elevated RPM.

Given that there is an oil pump bypass and filter bypass in play here, is this really an issue?

My RX-7 routinely saw 9000rpm @ 90psi and I never saw compromised media. If a quality filter of any type and proper spec is used, I just don't see this being a problem.

Only concern would be that the oil filter would go into bypass before the oil pump's pressure relief valve kicks in. If the filter is too restrictive, that could happen if the engine's oil pump was putting out lots of flow. The Subaru turbos put out tons of oil flow at high RPM (around 12+ GPM), and there's been numerous discussions on that, and why the Subaru filter has such a high bypass setting on the oil filter.

My take is that no engine should be redlined until the oil is at full operating temperature (200 deg F) . That will definitely help ensure the filter's bypass valve doesn't open up at high RPM or before the oil pump's pressure relief valve operates.

Here's a Flow vs Delta-P graph for a Purolator PureOne with 5w30 @ 200 F. Even at 12 GPM, the delta-p is only 5 PSI. So this filter should never go into bypass with hot oil even at redline as long as the filter wasn't clogged up much.

I'd say any known good brand name filter on the market would have a similar flow curve (such as the M1 the OP wants to use). For sure any full synthetic filter is going to flow at least this good or better.

Thank you, I will look into the TRD filters as well. Does anybody have any thoughts on K&N oil filters? I will probably just stick with M1.
Thanks again for all the replies.

I'm trying a Fram Ultra this oil change and my redline is 12,000 RPM...

You need to wade through the responses.

Some of the members here are homers for a particular brand and that is their answer to every question.

A high burst strength can and plenty of media is a hard combination to beat.

LoL ... probably because that answer is a good fit for the question.

Wow! What kind of engine? Is that a motorcycle?

Cruising at high revs is not the issue. Going from idle rpm to redline in 1 second will show the filter big pressure delta
