i have a mustache because i don't like shaving over my lips. I have had beards periodically but not in awhile. I don't mind shaving my face but not over my lips. Plus all the guys say my mustache just tickles them...just kidding.

in related, but not related news:

another BITOG member here holds a similarly unfounded belief about engine bays... a clean and dirt-free engine and engine compartment is a sure sign the engine has problem and the cleanliness is merely a devious approach to selling a problem car without buyer knowing about the problem beforehand.

I have a friend who wears socks because he has a ingrown nail . Another guy always wears a hat because he is going bald . In other words who cares

You got the joke wrong. Behind the beard is another FIST.

He should wear them like Dr. Bertlmann's socks, he always wears a mismatched pair. So whenever you see one sock, you instantly know the other sock isn't going to match.

I think every US president with a beard has been a Republican...

Greek Gods had beards.

Vikings had beards.

Blackbeard- well he had a beard.

I think it was once perceived as power (Genghis Khan).

It is supposed to be evolutionary to show dominance and strength...

The Navy does not allow moustaches alone, but does allow full-set beards. Moustaches but not beards are permitted in the Army and Air Force. However, members of the Commando and Special Forces regiments are allowed to wear beards if based outside their home camps.

Then theres the Amish - a beard for the Amish man represents a symbol of manhood, humility and husband-ship... Amish do not exchange traditional wedding rings when married, they simply stop shaving their beards forever. The reason there is no mustache in the Amish facial hair is because they associate mustaches with the military. Because Amish people are pacifists, they shave off the mustache to show their non-connection to anything military.

Then theres the Bible- Leviticus 19:27- "Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.

You got me!! I've been hiding behind a mustache for nearly 50 years...ever since a women I worked with asked me one day (very tactfully) if I had had a "harelip" repaired!?! "No, it was an 'injury' " I explained which was true, without giving any details. Oddly enough, I had never made the connection between that relatively faint scar and a harelip before that day! Even small grenade fragments aren't entirely helpful to ones appearance I found. Anyway, from that day to this I have covered that scar with hair!

Grew a full beard while in the Navy in 1972. Still have it. Used to be long, now short and always groomed and white as snow. Does that mean my inadequacies have lessened as my beard has shortened?

Sounds like a projectipn made up by a man hater women's libber in the '80s.

I've at times (3-4) had a full beard.
I've nearly always had the moustache/goatee going...I prefer it...but it comes and goes, although it hasn't gone in 5 years.

For fun, when workmantes decide to go for "Movember" (growing a mo in November to raise money for charity), I shave on the 10th or 11th and beat them to the line.

2014, my left side of my face was paralysed with Bell's Palsy...it's still not compleltely right, but was going to shave in spring and see how it actually looks...I can feel it, and in severely stressful periods (like now) it quivers, so I probably won't (doe sthat meet the definition of the OP ?

Beards still need maintenance, so anything other than the unkempt lumberjack look is more maintenance than shaving.

Lots of cultures and religions have similar...it's the excuse that I use for not having had a haircut in 16 years.

If you find the right pictures of Maria Orsich (Vrill Society), you'll see that there's some power to it.

My beard has come and gone at times, currently a goatee.... but the mustache has always been there. A Kiwi thing. 1980, and we are at Melbourne airport, picking up a mate flying over. Our Aussie mate laughed and said ''Look at all the Kiwis !.'' I said ''What ? How do you know they are Kiwi, they could be from anywhere.'' He said, ''They've all got a mustache !.'' He was right, all the guys coming through customs had a Mo.
