HID Flashlight

LOU,
There was a show on National Geographic the other night and they spent the entire hour on flashlights!? The average American owns 3.5 so I counted mine and have at least 10. This isn't as odd as it sounds because half were given to me as I'm working odd hours. There is a group of people who actually modify the beam for more light. I never imagined there was such an interest in an everyday item. Seems its born in our genes as a fear of the dark from hundreds of years ago {genetic?}.

The guys I ride mountain bikes with use HID lights when riding at night. The HID bike lights are brighter than the sun. If these flaslights are anywhere near as good as the bike lights, I can't wait to get my hands on one.

That seems like an odd statement coming from someone that is a member of a web forum dedicated to motor oil

Thats right, CPF (candlepower forum) is the flashlight enthusiast version of something like this forum. Everything from flashlights to light bulbs and anything related to light is talked about there. The Surefire flashlights seem to be a popular thing. That flashlight not something you can buy at Walmart. Its like having the power of a HID headlights. A Maglite flashlight will work just fine.

Those HID flashlights will be obsolete soon. New LED technology is coming to market that's brighter, cheaper, and uses less power.

Thanks for that link! Pretty cool. I have an obsession with flashlights too. I've got a surefire that is probably my favorite, but the batteries can be a pain. I've got a cool one that was closeout from restoration hardware that has two rails on it that if you just pick the thing up it turns on. Great for the nightstand. Originally bought it for my 2 year old because I figure she couldn't leave it on (only works if you are holding it) But I quickly took it back.

They don't have it anymore, but I found it here:

but I don't need 50 of them

I've got an LED Maglite that is amazing. Clearly the best of the 3 LED flashlights we have in the house.

I also have a regular Maglite that just seems so boring after getting the LED version, but it's a nice shiny blue that matches my car, so it's OK

I stumbled on to Candlepower forums over a year ago. I'm nearing 400 posts and now have about 25+ flashlights (mostly LED).

LEDs are still well below HIDs in terms of output ... but the price of HIDs are still kinda Looney-Toons.

LEDs (light emitting diodes) are made by semiconductor firms and are coming out almost as fast as computer chips. Then, some of the smaller, more modern flashlight builders (mostly Fenix and some Chinese companies) are taking these new emitters and putting them in tried and true flashlight designs and for very little R&D, you have a state of the art flashlight. 6 monnths later; Cree, Lumileds and Seoul Semiconductor are coming out with all new emitters that have better color rendering, efficiency and light output. Simply amazing.

My latest, brightest baby is a Chinese 1 x 18650 lithium-ion battery light with a Seoul P4 emitter ... puts out about 150 lumens. Cost me about $35 with battery and battery charger.

This light (about the size of a beefy 2xAA Minimag) compares favorably to my trusty 5 C-cell Maglite with an upgraded xenon bulb. Beam is pure white with a nice pattern and lights up everything better than my MAGlite ... for about 30% the size and weight.

Although the Maglite offers a bit better color rendering if focused properly.

LEDs are Simply amazing.
