Hi, I'm snoboy, and I'm new to the forum. I would like to say thanks for a great forum and I look forward to an education about oil. I hope I can contribute as well. I am a very small time Amsoil dealer but have been using it in every thing I own for apx. 4 years now. Is anyone running Amsoil High Performance 10w-40 oil in a 6.0 Powerstroke yet? I would like some feedback please. I am currently running HDD S3000 and getting great mileage apx. 17+ mpg unloaded and 13+ mpg w/ camper. I will sample oil in next few days, and post when I get results. the oil has apx. 5800 miles on it. I run a BMK 11 with a BE 100 on my 6.0. This will be an OIL ANALYZERS but I also ordered a Dyson kit from Blackstone. How long do they normally take to arrive? Thanks again... Mike

Not in a PowerStroke, but I'm soon to be running just the opposite in my diesel tractor - going from Amsoil 10w40 to Amsoil 5w30 HDD. In my quest for a single oil fleet I have decided on the 5w30 HDD.
The 10w40 HP seems to do well in my tractor. I will be sending out a sample hopefully today after 120 hours on the clock with bypass filtration. Mfg OCI is 100 hours on the machine.
Why not use the 15w40 diesel/marine?

Welcome snoboy!

Anxious to see your results. Let us know when your engine was built....I hear Ford has made changes to address some of the fuel dilution issues.

Tim

Thanks for the welcome guys. Terry I have exactly 20,000 miles on the truck. I started running synthetic at 14650 miles. Before that it was Delo 15w40. Tim, my truck is a 12-02' build, engine was manufactured on 12-13-02. Knock on wood it has been an awesome truck so far. So it sounds like you all are recommending that I stick with the S3000 HDD 5w30. OK I got no problem with that. Terry I have a kit from OA right now can I pull another sample in a clean container and transfer it to the blackstone container when it arrives then send it in. That way I'll get 2 readings from basically the same sample if you know what I mean.

Yes you may split the sample snoboy. Or save a few bucks and just send the OAI results and for $20 I will interpret it for you. Either way I think I can help you.

Terry

OK. But I dont understand because its fully CI-4 rated, right? I always had the romps with the 15w40. Thats why I dont want to use it.

romps? Not sure of this term, but the Amsoil 15w40 flows way better than the Delo 15w40, if that's what you mean.

The 10W-40 shears a bit much for me.....and I think it would shear a LOT in a PSD.

If Amsoil's web site is up-to-date (not a slam-dunk), the HDD 5w30 meets tougher specs than either the 10W-40 or the 15w40...specifically the Mack EO-N Premium Plus, and maybe other specs.

I'd stick with the HDD or the 15w40.

snoboy,

to BITOG.

I am seeing many of the new 6.0L ford diesels in analysis.

In general I am seeing a vis shear issue that contributes to a fuel dilution issue, both stress the add package and TBN retention and all contributes to increased wear rates.

I am anxious to evaluate the BKlabs testing and if you desire the CTC/Amsoil test results.

I would stick with the HDD for now as the 30w grade may be less shear prone in this application. The AME is my second choice as you have access to good prices on the Amsoil line.

Mike, how many total miles are on the engine ?

I am NOT familiar with the running the Amsoil 10w-40 HIPO oil in diesels.

As soon as we get your results we can speak to your issues and fine tune for you.

Thanks for your business and contributing here!

Terry

OK just for the record we're talking about the AMO 10w-40 right? I have no experience with it but the High temp/high shear numbers are real good 4.3cp. I was hoping that would in fact make it a prime candidate for the 6.0.I dont really no any thing else about the oil. The "romps" are a real bad rolling idle where the truck tries to die then run then die then run. I think because the oil is too cold and thick it is not able to create enough fuel pressure for about 60 seconds. The lighter oils dont seem to have this problem. Even guys running 15w40marine get it but only when its below 40deg.F outside.

Yes AMO does shear a lot. I hope your analysis comes back OK, but I'll bet it's thinned a bit.

Interesting that the AME causes idles issues in a big motor like that but I use it year 'round in my 2.1 liter gas turbo with no issues....is this just hearsay on the web or have experienced yourself?

HEUI injectors!

Pablo, regarding the AME. No, I have never used it but another Amsoil user and I were conversing about the romps and he told me that he still gets them now and then using AME. The Delo 15w40 on the other hand always gave my truck the romps. The HDD cured that issue completely for me. If you have time could you explain the HT/HS cp for me because I was under the impression that you wanted a higher number here. If history shows the AMO as a oil that shears down then I dont want that. I'll stick to the HDD. Thanks

There is NOTHING wrong with saying you are an Amsoil dealer. It's not a thing to be ashamed of or hide for whatever/ANY reason.

The line is drawn when anyone tries purely to sell a product - even site sponsors.

I admitted this in a post and got zapped so fast It made my head spin, so why is this thread still here?

By the way, welcome to the forums, but don`t say you are a dealer in the future or you post will disapear.

Ya right, I just mentioned being an Amsoil dealer and I got my post poofed by Vetteman. I wasn`t selling anything either, just happened to mention it.

Hasbeen has been a good poster and member of this board. He is correct, I am removing any reference to being a Dealer on posts. I am the Moderator that normally monitors this diesel section because I have 2 of them. But I left for Phoenix the day Snoboy made his post. Had to pick up a trailer. I am leaving this post alone, because it has good info in it.

Snoboy,
I have used both the Amsoil 15W40 and the 5W30 HDD. But both of mine are the 7.3 engines. No romp when cold. It appears that most 6.0 owners are using the Amsoil 5W30 HDD or conventional 10w30 CI rated oil to try and reduce this problem.

My recommendation is to stay away from the Amsoil 10W40 in a PSD period. The 5W30 HDD is my first choice and for cost ratio, the 15W40 Marine.

I am running Royal Purple 15W40 in my 95 PSD and Amsoil 5W30 HDD in my 01 PSD. I just took my 01 to Phoenix and picked up a trailer, probably weighed 2K total. I pulled from Phoenix to Flagstaff with no problem and was moving with or passing traffic with no heat or noise problems. The only thing that slowed me down in the 6% upgrades were those little boom boxes with wings on the back and 5 inch Coors can mufflers. They ran out of air and were running hot at 75-80 MPH. What was ironic is I was running in OD with the A/C on pulling a trailer and they were running with windows down, no A/C. Did I mention that the PSD moves a fair amount of smoke at altitude under heavy pedal.
