Has anyone done any warranty exchanges with Harbor Freight? Was it hassle free like Craftsman? Say I had a 5 piece wrench set and 1 broke.. Would I need to bring in just the broken one or all 5 pieces for the exchange? Should I hang onto my receipts?

Thanks.

Hello, Hassle free. They'd want the whole set because that's what they have to replace it with.

They didn't ask for my receipt when they exchanged my torx set (one twisted like a candy cane).

Their stuff bears their name. I think no receipt is needed. Kira

No Hassle. I had them replace my torque wrench, they literally just took my old one and gave me a new one without even scanning anything. Just walked right out the door like nothing ever happened. lol

Their return policy is what Sears used to be with their Craftsman line. In other words, it's usually an exchange with no questions asked.

If you search you'll find that it varies store to store. Some people say you need a receipt, others say you don't. Some say you have to exchange the whole set, others say you only have to exchange the broken piece.

Used to be? I exchanged a 1/2" ratchet just yesterday because it wasn't deburred. (I gouged myself twice the same day I bought them.) Anyways I received a replacement no questions asked. Just had to sign a receipt.

Ill just ask the store next time I'm in there regarding the receipt seeing how it varies store to store. Seems like a good place to do business.

Well then if you need a receipt Craftsman has the better warranty. I haven't returned anything to HF yet, but I have totally destroyed and abused Craftsman tools, then returned them only to get a no questions asked replacement.

I have a Jeep forum friend who buys broke Craftsman tools at yard sales only to return them for a warranty. He keeps them in a 5 gallon bucket and takes it in when it gets full. $.25 for a wrench isn't too bad.

If you one needs a reciept for the HF lifetime warranty hand tools, it's news to me. When this topic came up here a couple years ago I asked local store employee the procedure. Said paraphrase, 'as long we recognize the tool as one of ours, just pick out new one, no receipt required.' Saw proof recently on a torque wrench return, employee told customer just to pick out a new one. Customer told employee it didn't 'click,' which I happened to overhear. I stopped the guy and told him it's not like a loud click but rather more like a release or break point click. Said that's what he felt and ended up keeping his own torque wrench.

Yes, I think we're all talking about hand tools. Only the hand tools have a lifetime warranty.

Again, it can vary by location.

Like I said, that's news to me because my location requires no such receipt. Thus the specification of hand tools to eliminate any other possibility or which I may have been unaware. That said, I don't presume to speak for others here.

Found this after a quick search. Something to consider if you need some expendable tool for a random project.

"In-store no-hassle replacement policy:
“One tip is that Harbor Freight offers an in-store no-hassle replacement policy for a few bucks. I use it when I know I’m going to be using a product hard. For example, I bought a clear water pump (less than $40) and even with the proper pre-filter, the motor seized after three months. I walked in with the pump and the guarantee, showed the melted motor fan, picked up a replacement and walked out. It was that simple. The new one has worked fine.”

Right below section 6.

They demanded a receipt from me the two times I exchanged defective tools at two HF stores in the Philly area.I pointed out that their lifetime hand tool warranty language does not specify "with receipt", and who keeps a receipt for a $7.00 hammer? They were hard nosed about it but finally relented.I guess it varies with location as other posters do not report this issue with HF.

The OP specifically gave the example of a wrench set in the original post. And, generally only hand tools from HF have a lifetime warranty.

$20 for 2 years. But an additional 1/3 on top of the cost of a $60 jack (68053) seems high. Still thinking about returning it...
