At least we've still got a tic-tac factory in town. They make nutella there too.
The bra factory "improved the employment and living conditions of nearly 100 workers" (their words) about 8 years ago.
ADI (Australian Defence Industries) got sold to the French a while ago, and half of Oz's only military firearm factory is now gone.

Can we at least have our ICBMs made in USA?

It must really be pathetically cheap to manufacture just about anything. To have the domestic environment challenge the energy costs of transporting stuff needlessly ..literally across the globe in most cases, is just amazing to me.

Why don't I see really cheap candy bars under the Hershey label?

I want to start a factory in the USA. It will be exempt from all the pesky environmental and labor laws. I'll pay no property tax on the land it sits on, and there will be no pensions or medical plan for the workers. AND no other companies in the country will be allowed to do this.

Will I be more competitive than the other local businesses?

p.s. my company will be named ChinaCo.

interesting, since valentine's day is coming up. chocolate sales will be factored in my decision to buy hershey or not.

Here's another US chocolate company.

AFAIK, they don't have any foreign production.
I just saw a special on them on TV. A lot of their factory workforce has worked for them for over 20 years.

Another old (over 150 years) US chocolate company

Bought by a Swiss company but AFAIK, still only made in the US.

Look around, you might find a small local or regional chocolate company.

I imagine that it's cheaper to import the raw products than it is finished product, in terms of total energy expended in the processing.

Until bananas are a buck a pound, I have to admit that it's still way too cheap to ship stuff.

I really despise the notion that everything has to "get worse" to become sensible. It's really stupid to send scrap steel to China to have it processed and then sent back to the same place on the other side of the planet for use. It's the same for anything. Now if you've got unlimited energy, no problem. Let others slave away to give you stuff for slips of green paper

Many of our current imports are masked imports that are otherwise restricted. Danes can't import butter, which they have a surplus of. They can import butter cookies at a decent price. Some Austrian chocolate is in the same niche. I see Austrian chocolate and Danish cookies at Aldi ..the all time discount grocery chain that reduced the "food bank" surplus a good bit. Both of these nations have as high, or higher, cost of living than we do.

What bothers me about this trend with companies like Hershey is that they are what I consider very good companies. They produce a quality product and employment. Instead of retreating to a smaller status, due to demographic pressures, they're opting to maintain some status with lower costs.

After the big storms that nearly wiped out the banana industry a couple years ago, bananas went to $12/kilo. We were paying $1.50 each for our boy's bananas.

Industry had to re-establish quickly as there was pressure to import.

They did a good job, as we paid 98c/kilo last week (special), and the average price is $1.98 (81c US/lb)

I'll check the prices on organic bananas today when I get some stuff at As Nature Intended. Getting more of their sensational organic cherries too which are in season at the moment.

Well, we're very lucky in that we have banana and sugar barons that employ dictatorships throughout the third world. They bring us these things in adequate supply. Now we may have to embargo some competition along the way for "idealogical" reasons ..and hence pay a slight premium for ..for example, sugar. Can't buy that stuff from Cuba. On the otherhand, Dole and others own most of the plantations in the Philippines and elsewhere that bring us all this wonderful stuff ..much to the benefit of the locals
