Here we go again, Seagate to try hybrid drives...

I love the idea but you can make your own with a device that was currently released. You hookup the ssd and hdd and it does the caching for you. You get most of the speed increase without most of the risks.

When the industry switch from 512MB to 2MB RAM buffer and from 2MB to 64MB, they see huge improvement in speed. But when switching from 8MB to 64MB RAM buffer, it doesn't improve the speed that much until the platter density get much bigger.

A dedicated SSD would be much faster even if it isn't the latest generation, heck even a second hard drive to force the user to split intensive work load between 2 drives will see huge improvement compare to this hybrid drive.
 
They are talking about doing something similar with (IIRC) the expirimental Linux FS called BTRFS. Using a SSD as a caching front end to a larger HDD.
 
I don't understand where you're coming from, the Intel SSD is by far faster than any HDD in the testing for random I/O

Yes. The real reason SSDs feel so much faster is that random read/write speeds are much higher than on a traditional harddrive. The hybrid does not get that advantage, and so I see no reason to get one. I plan on picking up a 30GB OCZ SSD in the future for a boot/apps drive to compliment my WD 640GB SE16
 
ok, gotcha now.

I've been playing with an Intel 80GB MLC drive this week. It's not faster than the G.Skill 128GB Falcon that we were playing with last year. I don't get the excitement about Intel MLC drives. Now, their SLC drives are the cat's meow, so to speak, but you have to mortgage your house to afford a few of them.
