Hengst, Mahle or Mann

I have used Mann oil filters, engine filters and A/C filters on all the BMW's i have worked on and have no issues so far.

I think Mahle are some of the neatest, most carefully constructed filters made. beat Mann by those considerations in just about every filter I've purchased for wide variety of applications, automotive and industrial. This is not taking into account micron rating or other factors that may give one an edge over the other for a specific application.

So what you are saying the the manufacturers minimum spec isn't good enough to protect the engine?
From your statement MAN does not exceed OEM minimum?
Yet the OEM honors the engine warranty anyway. I would like to see some proof of that.

Interesting MAN claims to meed the highest standards.

I know we will never see anything to back up your wild claims, par for the course with you.

Not true. If you buy a brand new BMW, MB, Audi, etc you could remove the filter at the first OCI and dissect it to compare to another one after being the run the same amount of time/Km.
Ditto one from the dealer.

All three of these manufacturers are OEM suppliers.

So... that means I should be spending more money on a Wix, K&N or Mobil 1 filter?

a more expensive filter isn't exactly better... the last time I stocked up on filters, I paid $9 USD per Hengst filter... which is less expensive than the made in CHina Fram CH9911. A Mobil 1 filter costs $20 USD.

Paying more money on a filter does not mean you're automatically buying a superior filter

I just order whatever is cheapest for my VW.

I'm a tad skeptical of the Fram one though....the Chinese made ones with the plastic end caps.. used it once and the way it was crushed compared to their old "Made in Germany" Mann or Mahle filters..made me stop buying Fram.

If there is one item in a car worth spending money on it's the oil filter, as it will probably make more difference than the actual oil quality in most cases.

So I just ordered both. Here's some pics for comparison. I'm not a filter guru...

Mahle.

The Mahle is more in line with OEM. Note: I've always used OEM until now...even with the 20-30% discount off OEM, the *aftermaket OEM* is that much cheaper.

Picked up some *aftermarket OEM* charcoal cabin filters. With not alot of review yet, the OEM is built more *rugged*

Regarding charcoal cabin filters, I've had the best luck with NPN in my E39. They may not be the cheapest, but they fit better than some others I've tried.

Just ran out and checked on my E92....
Looks like for the E53, they went away with the plastic frame and it's ALL paper, including the frame.
Plastic still on my E92.

Who knows why the design change. A quick google and even the new OEM for the E53 shows a paper frame

What filters are in your E53 and E93? (Brand)
I've always used OE (Original Equipment) or OEM filters on my E60.
The OE filter for the N52, N54, N55 engines are all made by Mann but it seems like the OE filter for the V8 engines are made by Mahle or Hengst. (Forgot)

I've always used OEM on any of the vehicles.....
This is a *new* thing to me re: aftermarket/OEM equivalent stuff....

Granted, I have ordered bushings, control arms, yadda, shock mounts.

Some things I stick with OEM and some I don't.

A consumable like a filter and such.....still new to this to see the variances..

Of course I would have to say nothing but Made in Austria.

No wonder why it is top of the line in racing since decades.

MANN has a very good reputaion and all I can say that it is highly recommended. BUT as the previously posted pictures show MAHLE is a bit more different=rugged+precise.

Personally i have never touched any Hengst so cannot make a statement but it is OE supplier for sure.

You can't go wrong whichever You buy so get the cheapest.
