I got 40 qts.of Castrol Tection Diesel 15w40 basically for free after rebates from Pep Boys.I have a Dodge Hemi that I bought new that now has 52,000 miles on it. I have pampered it from day one.No towing,OCI's at 5k on the nose-currently running Penn.Platinum 10W30. I live near Austin Texas where we MIGHT have 3 or 4 days a year below 20 degrees. Summers mostly in the high 90's. This vehicle will be driven less than 10K miles annualy. Not too much stop and go anymore. Do you think that this 15w40 diesel bulk oil is too thick or in any way not suitable for this motor? Should I come up with a home brew to reduce viscosity? I sure would like to use this free oil for a few years but the flip side is that I have enough of it to lube my yard equipment for the next 13

Love that Hemi.I have a 2006/Jeep/Grand Cherokee/Overland with the 5.7liter Hemi with MDS.Do you have the MDS in your Hemi?If so can't use that oil.Must use 5W-20 and I think that oil is too thick for that engine.Joe

Who cares if it is free, use what the manufacturer recommends to prolong the life of your investment.

The 15w40 is a fleet friendly oil and in Texas wouldnt hurt a thing it may be better. We used Bulk Pennzoil Longlife 15w40 in a trucking company in Pennsylvania, we used it in everything, cars, trucks, motorcycles, lawnmowers etc, we never had a problem. From N14 Cummins to Dodge Caravans. I used it in my 1994 Dodge Ram with the 5.9 Gas(360) and I just traded last year with 120000 miles and it never used any oil.

Trucks that are started once per day and worked 8-16 hours can use a heaver fleet oil. A daily driver, that is started several times a day and often used for short trips needs a lighter oil. I'd use what the manufacture recommends. JMO. Ed

Your fine, I've been running 15w-40 diesel in my '94 grand cherokee with the 4.0L for like 4 years now after 45K+ miles. Engine runs quieter do to the heavier weight actually. In the winter I just switch over to a 5w-40 diesel.

Startup wear? My buddies 350 has 75k on it (strictly summer time car) and it strictly runs a straight 40 weight royal purple oil. Still running strong, no oil consumption.

That Dodge with 120000 and no oil consumption, was started every day and driven 4 miles to work and sat till the drive home. That same diesel oil is used in Alaska and Canada for equipment in sub zero weather and the temps in Texas are never going to thicken that oil to the point it doesnt flow quickly where it is needed in the engine. I have never seen 15w40 oil freeze and Ive been in 20 below zero.
