This should never be done. Why would you run an engine with an empty sump, even for a millisecond? I'm sorry to be excessively blunt, but that's completely idiotic. We already have a new poster asking if that's what should be done. Misinformation like this has zero place on BITOG. Peddle that nonsense on Red Flag Deals or someplace like that.

What shop manual recommends this procedure? What owner's manual recommends this procedure? Do Exxon-Mobil, SOPUS, or BP recommend doing this when using their products? I'm sure M1 would love to honour their 15,000 mile EP warranty for someone running their engines empty.

Engines are started after refilling the sump, and not before, period.

I've used syntec once. 2006 chrysler town and country 3.3 v6. Usually using. Castrol gtx At a 5-8000 mile oci. Ran the syntec 8000. Started rattleing bad at about 6500. Put the gtx back in this oci and she's runnin beautiful

Garak?
Is that really you?
Understand that when this incredibly polite Canadian becomes blunt, you should listen.
As he said, never, ever run any engine you want to keep without oil in it.
The mains and the cam bearings rely upon the flow of fresh oil to keep them alive.
Even a splash lubed OPE depends upon oil to splash around and keep the mains lubricated.
Never run an engine without oil!
Nowhere is this a recommended procedure.
Anyone who would recommend it should give it a try first using their own engine.

I never knew I should be doing this when changing oil.

Not even for a second.

Every service manual I have ever seen discusses making sure your oil is full before starting the engine.
People that think they should run the car for a bit without oil should take a cab or the bus.

King, you're going to have to give us more info buddy. What kind of stuff came out of the cylinders, or are you taking the mechanic's word for it? If that is what he is actually saying, you need to find a new mechanic.

I'd be willing to bet they accidentally started your engine without oil and are covering it up.

Never start without oil...I knew better when I was 4!. While I'mdraining the oil I will remove the sparkplug wires and crank it over VERY breifly 1-2 seconds only.

To do what? There is no need to start or even crank any engine without oil. You're trying to empty the sump. Why would you crank it and pump oil to the top end?

Just making sure you realize I was being facetious when I quoted king's statement; and that running his car w/o oil may have caused this problem.

That's cool man. It takes a while to learn everyone's "online" personality. Welcome BTW. Hope you had a great Turkey day.

i never change my own oil i was just wondering if thats what they had done they all really act very nervous around me i have taken them into court my car worked before it went in made a bad noise when it came out and i think mobile 1 is a better oil than castrol syntec which i do not believe is a true synthetic (could be wrong)

All you guys are really great so far

The poster is not posing a statement, he's asking a question. He was simply misinformed...easy dude...

Looks like he's a new guy. I believe his story.

Good. I'm just trying to make sure that new members aren't taken in by something foolish and dangerous.

Perhaps you should be changing your own oil, particularly if you've had trouble with this shop before. I hope they didn't do that, and if they did, it's definitely a place to avoid.

The problem is that, while there are obviously many good shops out there, there are plenty of them that can screw up an oil change (or any similarly routine procedure) royally. Poor procedures, not listening to instructions, not using appropriate products, not using common sense....

As I mentioned in another thread, the dealer from whom I bought my used G offered a lifetime warranty if I got the service done through them. Considering their subcontractor overfilled the sump by at least a litre and used a filter that didn't meet my approval, I declined. I'm glad I changed the oil almost the second I got it home.

thanks

All i need to know what u guys thought my repair shop well what can i say the minute i picked up my car they were acting so weird i know now that they did something wrong all of the lies and you know what i believed all of it

Again thanks
