Help With Unemployment Or Job Search 4 Friends Son

A good friend has a 25 year old son which is a great person and very friendly and honest and just good all around that lost his job last year because of forced downsizing he has been looking (really looking) but can't seem to find anything, now his unemployment ran out and he is really scared anyone know anything about unemployment? Or anyone hiring in the North Jersey area where he lives? He graguated H.S. with honors but he has no college and only speaks english which is fine with me.
If he spoke Chinese he would have a great job now but he does not. Any help would be great!
 
Join the military, go to college with tuition assistance graduate while in the service get out and enjoy a better life. Hopefully....

Its all about networking. Get your foot in the door. Ive been laid off twice..the feeling is not good. Dont give up and stay positive thats the advice id give him.
 
He will do just about anything he is not skilled in much but he is mechanical and gets along with everyone and wants everyone to feel good..My shop is to far for him but he is not really into cars that much
 
Try temp agencies. I have a friend who manages one in MI. they can almost always find work for anyone that is willing to work and be reliable. sure, the pay is not great - but you never know what opportunities it will open up.
 
Just to see how well he scores, have him take the ASVAB test, Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Something or another...

A good score can get you a decent rate (job) in the military...

I got a 94, you need around a 30 to get in...

He needs to get skilled. If he just 'gets a job' that is all he will ever do the rest of his life. He needs to get a job where he will learn a trade i.e. plumbing, HVAC, electrician, metal worker. This will raise his value, he will be in demand, and he will earn a good living the rest of his life. At 25 he needs to decide what he wants to do and put himself in front of someone who will let him work and learn the trade. If he is good with people he'll have no problem with this.
 
OP, I agree on the Temping, there are lots of weird jobs out there that are hard to recruit for or even describe and temping gives a worker a sampler of what's needed.
 
Your friend needs to expand his skills, as well as his job search area.

I'm sure he's a nice guy, but what's he been doing to improve his skills while he is on unemployment? It would have been the perfect time to learn a vocational skill; welding, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, etc.

If the job situation in New Jersey is really that bad then he needs to expand his horizons. There are a lot of job opportunities in this area-last weekend I was running some errands and, while driving through an industrial area noticed several help wanted signs. There have also been quite a few advertisements on the radio-DeeZee is one that has been recently advertising for help.

That's not exactly a rousing endorsement for him.
 
Waited until the unemployment ran out. I know a couple of people like that. The panic set in when the last check arrived.

At his age you take anything you can get. How many Macdonalds has he applied to??

This is the way to go. It provides networking opportunities and the ability to try out different places.

The money is not great, but it can get your foot in many doors.

I did this about 20+ years ago when I got out of the Army until I landed a full time gig. I presume it still works. It gets your name out there and you meet folks who either can hire you, or can recommend you to someone who needs your skills.

UPS and Fedex are always hiring like crazy this time of year, mostly for package handlers for the Christmas season. UPS also hires driver helpers this time of year. Might be worth checking out for something short term until something better comes along.
 
A job at a bank. Either as a teller or a personal banker. With a good personality and some intelligence he should easily get a job there. I know some people that started as a teller and worked their way up. It seems they're always looking for good people. Maybe go to college while working there.

A government job will take a while to go through the hiring process. But there are many jobs. To be specific, something like a corrections officer. Or apply to be a police officer if he's interested in that sort of thing.
 
He's a little late for a seasonal job. Most retailers have already hired for the holidays, get folks trained up while its slow. Packaged handlers at fedex are part time and only get around 20 hours a week. They will advertise that job at $12 something an hour, but only if you hire on for overnights. Most likely around $10 for all other shifts.

If he's got to have a job-temp agencies will do it, buut they generally aren't good jobs. My roommates mom moved up from San Jose to Portland and used temp jobs to put money in her pocket. She eventually found a job on her own and called the temp jobs a joke.
 
The very best thing IMO he can do is get a college education. If he can sacrifice 4 years of his young life, to make the rest of his life better, it will probably pay off in spades. Deliver pizzas, paint houses, mow lawns, shovel snow or whatever it takes. My son didn't graduate from college until he was 35 years old. He was married with 2 kids when he finally graduated. He worked a full time job and luckily he had an understanding employer who encouraged him as well. He can take some courses at the college he chooses online which would help as well. My sons salary tripled when he got his first job after graduating. It makes a huge difference this day and time. Thanks
