My father has a 1987 Dodge Omni with a carburetor. 2.2 liter engine.

The fuel pump is mounted to the block and since It has an overhead cam I assume that the fuel pump runs off of the crankshaft or a balance shaft or?

The eccentric that runs the pump has worn away, so the fuel pump wont pump!

So instead of putting many hours of labor into a POS car I bought an aftermarket electric fuel pump.

This aftermarket electric pump says that a filter which filters down to X amount(I dont have the specs here off hand)of microns must be added before the pump.

No mention of a filter #.

How can I find out filter micron ratings? Can I just go to the auto parts store and grab a 5/16's inline filter?

The electric fuel pumps I have seen (all located in fuel tanks) only had a "sock/screen" that was used to keep debris from being sucked into the pump. That screen was a very free flowing pre-filter...I would not have stated it as filtering at xx "micron" level, but rather as "screening out pump damaging things..." note- even those screens clog up eventually if there is any junk in the tank...
Probably any standard fuel filter that fits your inlet line would work just fine. I would use a LARGE one, and change it periodically, but otherwise no special requirements that I can think of.
Anybody else got anything else?

I have advice regarding this install that the average person doing this type of retrofit doesent do. Hook up a fuel pump safety switch. Holly carbs has one available from jegs, summit racing for about $20. It lets the pump work only when there is a running/starting engine via 3 lbs+ oil pressure. This aint no joke. If your fathers life is more valuble then $20, dont cheap out on this.

Funny that you should mention the safety switch. I have the - side of the pump ran to a generic oil pressure switch just for this reason.

I added a "T" to the existing oil pressure hole where the original sender was.
