Help with filter cap wrench slippage!!!

Alan, I got to give you mad props bro. I just got a 2006 Pontiac Vibe factory oil filter off with your method that I just read. I have a cheap $3 plastic oil filter wrench from walmart that I bought today and it was slipping using my torque wrench. the paper towel folded turned the filter on the first try and got it off. I searched the oil filter forums and mechanical tips and trick forum. I just stumbled onto it here in the auto and lube forum. It saved me money from buying the plier type wrench that I was going to get later today. Thanks bro

BTW,it's funny you mentioned using this to remove a factory filter off a Toyota engine because that's I came about using the paper towel/filter cap combo.

The factory filter was smaller than the OEM dealer filter.

I used to do something similar. I just use a small strip of sandpaper folded in half and jammed between the wrench and filter.

Yep, for an end-cap-style filter wrench, I use a rag or a paper towel spread out inside it to take up that extra room. Filter should come right off.

The glue and sand trick sounds like it would work but, sheesh, what a mess.

Are there specs for filter OD? What are you using? Are all the brands of say a 3593A the same diameter at the dome end?

As I pointed before, the filter on my truck quickly yields to the 16'' Channellocks I keep handy for many other uses. And the car I have now has a modern, super easy cartridge.

For the $3 between a K&N and other likely OK filter, you could quickly pay for a Lisle or other quality filter wrench.

I have a few wrenches I can use but I always try it by hand first. 99% of the time I can get it off by hand if it was properly installed.

Hahahahahaha..exactly. Its never failed me. If it does notice it has holes in the side to jam a screwdriver in the filter. You'll never need that feature.

I use a plastic end cap filter wrench for the truck, and it too slipped. I used a fine hacksaw blade to slot it at everal locations and then used a large hose clamp to tighten it up so that it fit snug on the end of the filters that I use. Works fine now.

I just had to mention what I do to make my metal strap filter wrench keep from slipping. All you need to do is use a small metal file and file some crosshatch lines on the inside of the strap, and badabing...no more slipping. Works perfectly.

harbor freight makes a pair of oil filter pliers.I use them when space allows.Work great.Other than that you could use two strap wrenches[push with one pull with other]thats how we use to get them of the old detroit 8.2's.

Yup comes in 2 sizes that I have and if you have access to swing a ratchet on the end of the filter with this thing it is a blessing from the gods with this one. You may crush you may squish but it will come off.

That's what I was going to say, except that I use a real rough file to rough up the whole surface of the inside of the band.

I was going to suggest a piece of sandpaper stuck inside the cap wrench to help but I like the other idea with the adhesive and sand.

Is the cap wrench "possibly" the wrong size? I have tried a couple that looked like they fit but were just off enough (like Standard and Metric sockets) to cause slippage.
