help with 1997 Tahoe transfer case leak.

It seems my 1997 Tahoe has developed a transfer case leak. It is dripping where the drive shaft goes into the back of the transfer case. Is this hard to get at? I'm wondering if I had a mechanic fix it how much would it cost on average? Thanks for any help!

I'm thinking you might need a new output shaft seal. The link below is slow to load, so be patient.

Usually the seal goes bad because the bushing is worn. If it's worn the driveshaft will be worn where it runs on the bushing. Gotta pull the shaft and see. Might just be the seal but be prepared for the worst.

Seal is cheap and relatively easy to change after shaft is out. I'd give it a shot.

SO if the drive shaft is worn it will have to be replaced? If so how much money for a new one?

You don't need a whole driveshaft, Only the slip yoke or whatever it's called. MAYBE there's even a repair sleeve for your existing one.

I agree with above. Change the seal and inspect the seal surface on the yoke. Maybe also check the balance on the shaft.

Got her fixed up! It was just a bad seal, everything else checked out ok. Cost a little over $100. Thanks for the help guys!

Mine had the same thing recently. The Borg Warner 4405 decided to coat the underside of my Explorer in ATF. Got a new seal and all is well. I guess the output shaft seals and pinion seals probably see more dirt than the other seals, so they wear out faster. I have had to replace one pinion seal and one output shaft seal, but everything else is good.
